According to The Hollywood Reporter, former Batwoman actress Ruby Rose is officially replacing Elliot Page in the esports movie 1up. Page, coming off his stunning performance in the second season of Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy, has already exited the project.
Ruby Rose played Kate Kane in the first season of the CW’s Batwoman show before exiting in May 2020. Javicia Leslie is currently playing the title role in the show’s now-airing second season. Hopefully, the series isn’t canceled. It has been through production hell already. It just needs a chance to shine! I think it could turn into something even more special, especially given the passion and talent involved.
On the big screen, Ruby Rose appeared as mute henchwoman Ares in 2017’s John Wick Chapter 2. She also co-starred in xXx: Return of Xander Cage, The Meg, and Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. More recently, she has just finished filming Vanquish alongside Morgan Freeman.
1up marks the first millennial-targeting collaboration between BuzzFeed and Lionsgate. The plot follows a young woman who “quits her college esports team, fed up with gaslighting from her male counterparts, and quickly realizes that her decision comes at the cost of her scholarship. But, she discovers a loophole to save her collegiate future: if she can find a coach and assemble a whole new varsity-caliber team capable of reaching the State Finals. Valerie turns to her professor, Parker Nesby, and together with Valerie’s best friend and fellow gamer Sloane, they form and train a rag-tag women’s team committed to taking down the boys that tried to shut them out of gaming in the first place.” Paris Berelc will play the protagonist while Ruby Rose will portray her mentor. That sounds really interesting, and I’m confident Ruby Rose will knock it out of the park.
Of the intention behind the film’s creation, Richard Alan Reid, Senior VP of global content, said:
Through this joint effort, we’re eager to harness the power of the internet to reach global millennial and Gen Z audiences and tap into one of the most passionate online fanbases.
Lionsgate’s Lauren Bixby added to that by saying:
1UP is an exciting, engaging comedy with universal themes, but what truly differentiates this film are the diverse, nuanced characters that are unusual for this genre – a rich variety of people who we don’t get to see every day.
This sounds very exciting, and while I’m sad we won’t be seeing Elliot Page in the role, I’m pleased that Lionsgate and BuzzFeed were able to nab a talent such as Ruby Rose. She is fantastic in nearly every part she plays, and hopefully, her turn as a mentor/professor here will allow her to flex her acting chops in a different way. She has mostly been relegated to showcasing her abilities in action roles, so it is exciting to know she will be getting a role that focuses more on her dramatic talents instead of just her physical ones.
The Kissing Booth 2‘s Taylor Zakhar Perez, Assassination Nation‘s Hari Nef, and 68 Whiskey‘s Nicholas Coombe are joining Ruby Rose in supporting roles.
As of now, 1up does not have a set release date. With the news of Ruby Rose entering the production, we imagine that production is going to get underway as soon as possible. Maybe we will see 1up finished and ready to view by the end of the year? If not, expect to see it hit screens in 2022.
