It looks like director James Mangold may have just revealed the setting for Indiana Jones 5 and it isn't what we expected.

Harrison Ford Indiana Jones 5

Indiana Jones 5 is coming down the pike, putting Harrison Ford back in the titular film which might finally culminate the iconic franchise. There’s, of course, quite a bit of speculation and wondering about where this film will take place considering the others have featured locations in Egypt, China, India, Austria, England and many more. The dude is a world traveler and the films have reflected as much. But for this next installment, Indy might be operating a little closer to home. Director James Mangold could have possibly given a hint to Indiana Jones 5’s setting. Check out the tweet he sent out last week:

While Mangold doesn’t specifically reference Indiana Jones 5 in his tweet, he does say “all” of his movies in production take place there. And the timeline for this next installment of Indiana Jones would line up with this as well. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull took place in 1957. That film came out in 2008 with Harrison Ford in the lead role. Thirteen years later in real time, and with Ford aging could keep the timeline in sync. It would basically put the character in 60s New York during The Velvet Underground’s rise in popularity (they were formed in 1964).

Will Indiana Jones 5 overlap with the music scene in New York during the 1960s? It feels like a stretch considering the character is much more in the artifact-hunting game than going to underground concerts in the Village. But I suppose anything is possible. It’s possible that Mangold is simply drawing on the music for the feel and vibe of the movie in establishing the tone. And if that’s true, this would represent a very different setting than we’ve seen in other Indiana Jones iterations.

Other than Harrison Ford definitively signing on for an Indiana Jones 5, little else is known about how the film will unfold. The actor is coming up on 80 years old and his treasure-hunting, swashbuckling days are probably heading into the sunset. But culminating with a story about one of his most famous characters feels like something we can get behind. In terms of movies, this is basically all he has on tap scheduled for pre-production right now.

When it finally happens, of course, this will be the fifth film in the franchise and the first since 2008. Before that, it had been almost 20 years since 1989’s The Last Crusade which deftly paired Harrison Ford with the late Sean Connery. These followed a trend of the franchise being a massive box office draw. In all, the last two movies, even with all the years between them earned almost $1.5 billion combined at the box office. Rest assured there is still a massive appetite for an Indiana Jones 5.

We are likely to keep getting more news on Indiana Jones 5 over the next few weeks and months for a movie that could bring the franchise to a close. It could be bittersweet for sure.
