Chris Evans looks to be coming back as Captain America but in a twisted way.

The rumors are flying fast and speculation is running amok as it pertains to Chris Evans and his possible return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Captain America. Will he? Won’t he? If he does, in what form will we see Captain America? If the latest rumor by insider Daniel Richtman is to be believed, then we will be seeing Evans as Cap and the plans are for the old Cap to take on the new Cap.
For Richtman’s part, he reports that Chris Evans is on deck to return for not one, not two, but for three Marvel Cinematic Universe projects. One as the evil Captain Hydra and the other two in Wolverine-related projects that would obviously be set in the past.
Chris Evans has said on multiple occasions he would not be returning to his role as Captain America. He was very satisfied with how his Cap’s story arc concluded in Avengers: Endgame where an old Cap returned to hand over his shield to Sam Wilson/Falcon (Anthony Mackie). But money has a way of changing the minds of even the stubbornest of actors and Chris Evans doesn’t appear to be that stubborn. While he continues to deny the rumors, most recently with his “news to me” tweet which followed speculation that he is in contract negotiations for his Marvel Cinematic Universe return, Evans has always left the door slightly ajar when it comes to Cap.
As for old Cap versus new Cap, this would see the evil version of Captain America (Captain Hydra) show up and battle Sam Wilson’s, Captain America. Welcome to the multiverse. This whole storyline is rumored to begin with the events taking place in WandaVision, which opens up the multiverse, then continues on in Spider-Man 3, and then conclude in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. It is already a known fact that Benedict Cumberbatch will star in all three projects.
While Chris Evans pretty much has a “no comment” approach to addressing Cap’s return, the new Cap (Mackie) did address it. “Ya know, I’ve heard that I’ve seen that, and, look, Chris is my boy, so if they’re getting the band back together, I’ll be very happy with that,” he said on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.
Chris Evans and Anthony Mackie are no strangers to battles, the one they are currently in being much more important than anything old Cap versus new Cap could bring. This battle is for America’s Ass and it is one, says Mackie, that now belongs to him. “Chris and I laugh and joke about it all the time, I have a much better ass than Chris Evans. So one day we’re gonna do the biking shorts test, or the compression shorts test, and we’re gonna have everybody choose, which is America’s ass. I think it’s gonna be 50/50 split. Some people like their pizza lightly toasted, some people like a little bit of char on their pizza, you know what I’m saying? So it’s all about how you like your buns cooked.”
There is also one more battle old Cap could be facing if his return is indeed true. Wyatt Russell (Overlord) is signed on to appear as superhero US Agent, the Captain America replacement, and the two have a long history in the Marvel comics. If Marvel was somehow able to bring that comic storyline to the big screen, it’d definitely be worth the price of admission.
