While we still don’t have an official release date for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, it looks like it could be coming soon. Paramount+ is launching their new streaming service on March 4th, which will be a rebranding of what CBS All-Access has to offer, including programming from CBS, MTV, Nickelodeon, and Paramount Pictures. This weekend, they released a thirty-second promo video showing off some of the characters you can expect to see on Paramount+, and amongst these characters are two from Strange New Worlds: Captain Pike and Science Officer Spock.
With all the Star Trek programs currently available to pull characters from, choosing Star Trek: Strange New Worlds offers a lot of hope that we might be seeing the new series soon. Sir Patrick Stewart, who stars in Star Trek: Picard, can be heard narrating the thirty-second promo. Anson Mount, who plays Captain Pike, is one of the first characters we see climbing the mountain. Spock is shown a few seconds later, with narration about intelligence just before Beavis and Butt-Head show up.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will be an exciting addition to the current shows rolling out. This series will take place before The Original Series, which means we’ll be seeing an earlier version of Spock, played by Ethan Peck, who also played the role on Star Trek: Discovery.
Both Ethan Peck and Anson Mount, as Captain Pike, have recently been in episodes of Star Trek: Discovery, but their characters have been around a lot longer than that. Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry had originally crafted a pilot episode of Star Trek that followed Captain Pike. Ultimately, the series starred the beloved Captain Kirk, though fan love for Pike stuck around. He’s mentioned in many other series and is now coming back to star in his own show.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is rumored to tell stories that are wrapped up within a single episode, like The Original Series. Discovery has attempted to tell larger arcs, rather than smaller stories, but is said to be steering more toward that style in the upcoming fourth season.
Earlier in 2020, it was reported that series writer Akela Cooper mentioned there will be at least one plot point in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds that arcs throughout the first season. While they haven’t revealed what that will be, it is said to build toward a major story event. The story itself will center around Captain Christopher Pike and Spock, as well as the character Number One, also known as Una. Number One is another character we’ve recently gotten to know better on Discovery. She and Pike will be serving as parental figures to young Spock on the Enterprise.
This first commercial is just a glimpse of the new campaign for Paramount+. It’s expected that we’ll be seeing more promotions roll out over the next 12 weeks before the streaming service’s launch. Hopefully, they’ll include more information on when we might be seeing Star Trek: Strange New Worlds release on the new streaming service.
