One Of Cameron Diaz’s Most Beloved Movies Is Hitting Netflix
Cameron Diaz might be done with acting for time being at least. But there's a chance to catch one of her first movies now on Netflix.
Cameron Diaz’s acting career looks like it’s on hold (or maybe over) but that doesn’t mean we can’t go back and enjoy any number of movies the actress put out over her time on the big screen. She’s played all kinds of roles over the years, but now the movie that continued putting her on the map is available on streaming. You can check out My Best Friend’s Wedding right now over on Netflix.
My Best Friend’s Wedding hit the big screen all the way back in 1997 with Julia Roberts in the lead role. The story is your fairly standard romantic comedy fare with a simple and silly concept. Essentially, Jules (Roberts) and her best friend Michael (Dermot Mulroney) had long ago made a pact to get married to each other if neither were hitched by the time they were 28. But on the eve of that date, he lets her know he’s planning on getting married to Kimmy (Cameron Diaz). This sets about a chain of events in which Jules hatches a plan to sabotage the wedding because she thinks she’s in love with Michael.
This unleashes a very 90s movie series of events that really don’t paint Julia Roberts’ character in all that great of a light even if the entire premise is silly to the point of stupid. But Cameron Diaz had a breakout turn in the film as a sympathetic figure in the middle of a really weird “love” triangle. It ended up being a career-unlocking role for the actress, one that put her on the map after co-starring with two major names on the screen. Check out the trailer and you’ll see how Diaz’s famous infectious smile hits the screen for one of the first times.
My Best Friend’s Wedding ended up being a major hit for everyone involved. Back in the day when rom-coms could turn massive profits at the box office this one really spiked the dollars. It finished with nearly $300 million on just a $38 million budget. Having three stars in Julia Roberts, Dylan Mulroney and Cameron Diaz in major roles helped and it also earned solid reviews with critics, finishing at 73% on the Rotten Tomatometer.
This wasn’t Cameron Diaz’s first role in a major film. She really broke on the scene a few years before playing Jim Carrey’s love interest in The Mask. That movie was what put her on the map because of her role and the sheer magnitude of the movie. But My Best Friend’s Wedding solidified it. She was on her way to even bigger things.
The next few years would see Cameron Diaz take more lead roles in movies like There’s Something About Mary and Being John Malkovich. Then, of course, there was a huge action turn in Charlie’s Angels which had her at the center of the trio of titular spies. She ended up doing a sequel along with Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu in Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle.
Things never really slowed down with Cameron Diaz starring in tons of flicks over the next 15 years or so. Some of the bigger and more notable productions included of course her voicing Princess Fiona in the Shrek films, What Happens in Vegas opposite Ashton Kutcher plus some racier roles in Bad Teacher and Sex Tape. She did seem like she was aging gracefully into older roles with the beauty never subsided even in the slightest.
But then in 2014, Cameron Diaz basically called it quits on Hollywood and she hasn’t been in a movie in the last six years. She cited wanting to return to a little more normality in her personal life as the decision. That included getting married and spending more time with her child after basically a lifetime in front of a camera. And she also opened a winery in that time.
So even if you aren’t getting new Cameron Diaz movies up on the screen, there’s always a chance to go back and see where it really started My Best Friend’s Wedding is silly but sweet. A perfect example of the 90s rom-com and Cameron Diaz has all the likability we’d see throughout the rest of her career.
