Look out Buffy, cancel culture is coming and you are squarely in their crosshairs. Kristy Swanson, the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer, looked to be in slaying-mode when she recently tweeted out, “If Cancel Culture is really going to have Donald J. Trump removed from the John Hughes movie “Home Alone,” then in support of MY PRESIDENT, I’d like to have myself officially removed from the John Hughes’ films, “Pretty In Pink” and “Ferris Buhler’s Day Off.” In the view of the internet’s many trolls, those are fighting words.
One can forgive Kristy Swanson (can’t they?) for treading into deep waters without a life jacket. We are, in fact, in the middle of a pandemic. Businesses have been destroyed, cities burned, virtually all of the nation has been shut down at one time or another and continues to be, acting gigs are few and far between, and of course, backing President Donald Trump is now a no-no.
Before Kristy Swanson went slay-style on Twitter, the cancel culture-ists again had their sights on Trump when social media called for his extremely brief cameo in the 1992 Chris Columbus Christmas comedy Home Alone 2: Lost in New York to be digitally removed. You know, because it was offensive. Somehow. Maybe it was how he delivered his one line, “Down the hall and to the left.” You be the judge.
Chances are, though, the history-erasers are just looking to stir the pot. It worked and Kristy Swanson’s pot got stirred
Once social media caught hold of one more Trump thing they could attempt to erase, Kristy Swanson decided she needed to back “MY PRESIDENT” by having his back. Unfortunately for ex-Buffy, she got slayed. Social media dragged her and continues to drag her. One follower wrote, “How would we know that Ferris is sick?!?,” referring to her one line in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.
Another responded with, “You can support whoever you want, but you were pretty much just an extra in all the movies you’re in. You being removed from the movies wouldn’t make of a difference. CGI can easily grant your wish.”
And those were just the beginning. Even Kristy Swanson’s fellow celebrity “actors” rained down on her as if their stance was much more important than hers. Patton Oswalt led off with, “This is weak, Kristy. I was removed from AS GOOD AS IT GETS and BAD SANTA years before Trump even THOUGHT of running for President. That’s how I support MY leader. Why do you hate America?”
Even Rosanna Arquette, Jane Lynch, and Ken Oslin joined in the onslaught against Kristy Swanson. Arquette tweeted, “So would we,” while Lynch was a little more brutal with, “I’m sorry. Who are you?” Olin kept it just as personal, “Retweet if you’re okay with @KirstySwansonXO being removed from every movie she was ever in?”
Chris Columbus revealed last year just how Trump “bullied his way into the movie”. The movie, if you recall, was shot at his Trump Plaza Hotel but for the producers and director to be able to use the building, Trump had one stipulation. “We paid the fee, but he also said, ‘The only way you can use the Plaza is if I’m in the movie’,” Columbus said via the Independent. “So we agreed to put him in the movie, and when we screened it for the first time the oddest thing happened: People cheered when Trump showed up on screen. So I said to my editor, ‘Leave him in the movie. It’s a moment for the audience.’” Looks like that audience is having none of it now.
Maybe Kristy Swanson isn’t on board, but you can even count the film’s star, Macaulay Culkin, as another who would support removing Trump from the movie. You know, because Culkin’s opinion is just as important. When a Twitter user posted a re-edit of the Trump scene with Culkin’s Kevin McAllister talking to a mute and invisible Trump, Culkin responded with one word, “Bravo.” Well, bravo to you too, Macaulay.
Only time will tell how far the newly empowered cancel culture-ists will take this one. Time will also tell where Kristy Swanson’s career will head. She hasn’t had what you’ld would call the biggest of careers, but her work has been steady. Unfortunately, though, backing “HER PRESIDENT” may have just stuck a fork in Kristy Swanson’s future.
