Star Trek: Lower Decks Movie Happening?
A new rumor suggests that the CBS All Access animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks might be getting its own feature film.
The first animated Star Trek outing since the ’70s and the ninth series in its respective universe, Star Trek: Lower Decks focuses on the motley support crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos as they navigate life aboard “one of Starfleet’s least important ships.” Now, just one season into its run, there are whispers about more Lower Decks goodness coming at us in a big way.
Gossip writer Daniel Richtman has again come forth with another rumor, this one centering around a Star Trek: Lower Decks film from Paramount. As awesome as this rumor is, though, it’s important to take it with a grain of salt. Maybe even a heap of salt. Nothing has been confirmed by anyone involved with the series, and it’s unlikely that anyone will come forth to confirm or deny Richtman’s rumor.
The 10-episode first season of Star Trek: Lower Decks premiered on CBS All Access on August 6, 2020. The series was created by Solar Opposites co-creator Mike McMahan and stars Tawny Newsome, Jack Quaid, Noel Wells, Eugene Cordero, Dawnn Lewis, Jerry O’Connell, Fred Tatasciore, and Gillian Vigman.
Star Trek: Discovery co-creator/showrunner Alex Kurtzman started expanding Gene Roddenberry’s beloved universe in 2020, with Star Trek: Lower Decks being one of the earliest efforts in that initiative. Star Trek: Discovery proved massively successful for CBS All Access, earning itself a Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Award and drawing a notably large number of new subscribers for the streaming service.
Star Trek as a brand has been such a success for CBS All Access that they’ve continued to flesh out the world with multiple new shows. In the years following the debut of Star Trek: Discovery in 2017, CBS All Access has already put out Short Treks, the first season of Lower Decks, and the first season of Picard, with a second one on the way.
In addition to this, there are major plans for Star Trek television series in the future. Prodigy will be another animated series, yet this one will be for younger audiences, and will air on Nickelodeon as a joint-venture with CBS. Strange New Worlds will show the early days of the Enterprise, and bring back Discovery actors Anson Mount, Ethan Peck, and Rebecca Romijn. There’s also another Discovery spinoff in the works with Section 31, which will also feature Michelle Yeoh reprising her Discovery role.
There are also several other Star Trek series in the works that are likely a little farther off. One such series is being developed by Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz – who created The O.C. – and will be set at the Starfleet Academy. Finally, there are plans for a limited series called Ceti Alpha V, which will focus on the characters of Khan.
While a second season has been confirmed to hit the streamer later this year, there has been no official word from those involved regarding a movie. It’s certainly possible, especially considering the first season received decent reviews and appeared to strike a chord with a large enough audience. Plus with the Star Trek universe growing, it only seems like a matter of time before we see new Star Trek films in the world, animated or not.
