Deadpool 3 is officially a Marvel Studios production and Ryan Reynolds couldn’t be happier about it. Following his announcement in December 2019, Reynolds has taken to social media, appeared on talk shows, and publicly proclaimed his excitement for Wade Wilson’s next big-screen outing. Now, in addition to giving fans an official time, Marvel Cinematic Universe architect Kevin Feige has confirmed that Deadpool will indeed be part of the shared universe Marvel has been building since 2008’s Iron Man.
Speaking with Collider, Feige said:
It will be rated R and we are working on a script right now, and Ryan [Reynolds] is overseeing a script right now…It will not be [filming] this year. Ryan is a very busy, very successful actor. We’ve got a number of things we’ve already announced that we now have to make, but it’s exciting for it to have begun. Again, a very different type of character in the MCU, and Ryan is a force of nature, which is just awesome to see him bring that character to life.
There is a ton to unpack here. But first, let’s acknowledge how big this news is. Feige just revealed information that will absolutely get fans pumped for the Merc with a Mouth’s Marvel Cinematic Universe debut. None of this is particularly surprising; it simply builds on what we already knew or suspected. Bob’s Burgers writers/executive producers Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Loeglin were tapped to write the script, with Ryan Reynolds now confirmed to be assisting them.
What does this mean? Well, it points to a few things. This could be (and probably is) Disney’s way of introducing the X-Men into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Considering that Feige and the big wigs at Marvel basically rewrote histories for X-Men characters such as Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, it will be interesting to see how they build from that. It will also be fun to see how the Marvel Cinematic Universe tweaks or straight-up revamps the Fantastic Four (because that’s a thing now, too). Regardless of where they go with it, one thing is clear: No more IP dodging for this studio!
As other outlets have noted, it’s extremely unlikely that we’ll get Deadpool 3 before 2023. Remember that Feige mentioned that filming wouldn’t commence until at least next year, which puts most predictions at 2023 at the absolute earliest. Thor 4 and the Tom Holland-led Spider-Man 3 are currently filming, and a number of other high-profile projects are next in line for production. The wait for Deadpool 3 has already been long, and it looks like fans of Ryan Reynolds and the character will have to hang on a bit longer. Also, bringing up how busy and successful an actor is basically translates to, “He’s a hot commodity. Be patient.” Given that the film will probably be excellent, I’m willing to wait this one out.
Ryan Reynolds will definitely be making his presence known in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. You can bet that Marvel will be getting their money’s worth out of the actor and character. He is the perfect superhero to use for small cameo appearances in other Marvel Cinematic Universe entries. In a weird way, Deadpool could become the new Stan Lee of the Marvel Cinematic Universe: a fun cameo that could pop up at any time in any of these movies.
What do you think? Are you excited to see Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? What kind of trouble will he end up causing for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes? Could he end up being a valuable ally? Do you think that we’ll see the movie by 2023? Let us know and keep your eyes peeled for more updates on everything Feige and Marvel are cooking up.
