Doom Patrol Is Adding A New Superpowered Character

Doom Patrol is one of the weirdest and most enjoyable superhero shows to come out in a very long time. It is arguably the best superhero show you can watch right now and it is very refreshing to know that the series is going to get another season on the streaming service, HBO Max. We are eagerly anticipating any news we can get about this upcoming season, and a new casting announcement has us deeply intrigued at another superpowered addition to the ever-expanding and always bizarre cast of superheroes.
Insider Daniel Richtman looks to have gotten his hands on a casting call sheet for the third season of Doom Patrol. This announcement says that the series is “casting 30s-40s, open ethnicity for a character called MONSTER MAN.” If this casting call is legitimate, there are a few questions it raises for DC fans. Probably the most notable is that there is no singular character called Monster Man in the DC canon, but there might be another hint to this role.
Most of Doom Patrol has taken its inspiration from the comic book series of the same name, but it would not be surprising to see the show start pulling characters from other parts of the DC universe. If they are, this could be a reference to the Monster Men. These were people who had been experimented on by Dr. Hugo Strange which caused them to turn into savage brutes. They have only appeared in a handful of Batman stories, but it would not be the biggest shock to see them (or one of them) show up in the show.
Why is that? Because Doom Patrol likes to focus on characters whose superpowered abilities fundamentally transform them in some irreversible way. Usually, that involves a physical change that makes them “freakish” to normal society. It is possible that a Monster Man could find their way to Doom Manor and might even become another addition to the superhero ensemble. It could be a way for the show to touch on a different form of mental disabilities than what it currently has explored.
However, there might be a more mundane explanation for this casting call. Projects like Doom Patrol often put out vague or even fake casting call descriptions in order to keep secrets about the project under wraps. This supposed Monster Man could actually be a more established DC character, but the casting call is giving the role a more clandestine name so that the project can avoid a big spoiler leaking out there. It happens all the time in Hollywood, especially with comic book productions where diehard fans will know any and every established character on the roster.
What matters most about this news is that Doom Patrol Season 3 is definitely happening since casting is underway. If you haven’t gotten the chance to watch the show because it was originally only available on DC Universe, there is no better time than the present to give the show a look on HBO Max. It’s wild and weird but we can always use more of that in the world of superhero cinema.
