While no one in charge has said Amber Heard is being replaced in Aquaman 2, that hasn’t stopped fans from discussing the possibility. In fact, fans are going so far as to discuss who should replace Heard as Mera. An overwhelming favorite has long been Emilia Clarke. Now, fan artists are giving us peeks at what that reality could look like. Artist JPH_photoshop on Instagram shows us below what we could expect with Emilia Clarke as Mera.

One of the reasons Emilia Clarke has been a fan favorite replacement for so long is her past role with Jason Momoa on Game of Thrones. Jason Momoa now plays Arthur Curry in Aquaman, but he first gained major attention from audiences in season one of Game of Thrones. The two have been friends since they first met on the show, despite Momoa leaving early on. They’re often seen together in their everyday lives and do interviews together. The two are such close friends it took people a while to believe they weren’t dating.
Reviews have commented on their genuine chemistry on set. This may be in part because they appreciate each other’s energy. Emilia Clarke has said Jason Momoa put her at ease during some of their more vulnerable scenes together. While it’s never easy with audiences when an actor is replaced in a franchise, it may go down better with viewers when they see the pair reunited on screen again, especially since fans have been bringing this up for months. Emilia Clarke has been depicted in great fan art as Mera a few times now.
Of course, this is all fan art and wishful thinking. Despite the petition to get Amber Heard fired from Aquaman 2, there has been no news of her leaving the role. Heard has repeatedly said that any rumors of her departure are only that. She seems confident the studio will be sticking with her for the sequel, even if fans aren’t.
Emilia Clarke continued to play Daenerys in Game of Thrones until the end of the series. Unfortunately, we haven’t seen her in much since. During the show’s run, she starred in the 2016 movie Me Before You. She also played Sarah Connor in Terminator Genisys in 2015. While she may be wanting a bit of a break from acting after so many years on Game of Thrones, it may be that she is having a difficult time breaking free from her iconic role as Khaleesi. It would be great for fans to see her take on a role in a new franchise. It would be doubly so to see her reunite with Momoa in Aquaman 2. Perhaps we’ll be seeing fan-created works showing the pair together next.
