Ever since The Mandalorian debuted in 2019, it has been clear Baby Yoda is the newest star in the Star Wars universe. Despite Baby Yoda – aka Grogu – being adorable, with his Force powers and frog-eating, the success of the character apparently took Disney by surprise, as the company didn’t have enough merchandise to meet demand. But according to a new rumor, Disney has learned from their mistake and might be working on a new Baby Yoda spinoff series.

We Got This Covered is reporting the rumor from gossip writer Daniel Richtman, who gives no details about the possible series, other than that it’s apparently in early development. With The Mandalorian’s second season ending with Luke Skywalker taking Grogu to learn the ways of the Force, it’s already unclear what it coming for the little green character.

But while The Mandalorian’s second season ended with the reveal that a new series, entitled The Book of Boba Fett, was on the way, there was no hint that Baby Yoda might be getting his own series. Plus, considering The Mandalorian already focuses primarily on the title Mandalorian and Baby Yoda as it is, there certainly doesn’t seem to be a necessity in giving Grogu his own show.

It also seems unlikely that a Baby Yoda series would be happening any time soon, considering how packed Disney+’s schedule already is with new Star Wars content. Next year will already see Season Three of The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett in December 2021. While most of the recently announced Star Wars series don’t have release dates, it’s expected that Andor, centered on Diego Luna’s Rogue One character Cassian Andor, and the Ewan McGregor-starring Obi-Wan Kenobi, will both likely debut in 2022.

The Mandalorian already has multiple spinoffs in development, beyond the aforementioned The Book of Boba Fett. Disney announced that they are working on a spinoff focused on Rosario Dawson’s Ahsoka Tano, fittingly titled Ahsoka, and another series called Star Wars: Rangers of the New Republic. Ahsoka and Rangers of the New Republic will eventually combine with The Mandalorian for a major unifying event, although Disney hasn’t said when that will come. But one has to imagine Baby Yoda will be involved with whatever the future of Disney holds.

Even though there could theoretically be a series focused on Baby Yoda’s training with Luke Skywalker, it also seems extremely unlikely Disney would make a show with a de-aged Skywalker, especially considering the negative criticism the visuals of that character received. However, Disney has shown they want to build out the animated Star Wars world and tie that universe into the live-action, so it’s possible Baby Yoda could receive his own animated series.

Disney already has Star Wars: The Bad Batch, Visions, and Droids on the way, and considering Baby Yoda can’t even talk yet, a series centered around the character would kind of make sense in animated form. Baby Yoda is already one of the central characters of The Mandalorian, so it doesn’t really make sense for the character to go off on his own series. But considering how beloved Baby Yoda is, and how much of a merchandise seller the character has become, it would certainly make sense for Disney to give Grogu his own animated adventure.
