Eddie Murphy has been on a career comeback lately. Between the truly excellent Dolemite Is My Name and his well-received return to Saturday Night Live, the comedian and actor is riding high. And now, he is bringing back one of his most beloved films for a sequel. Coming 2 America is the sequel to Coming to America (that’s confusing) and it has just released its first trailer.
Get a look at Eddie Murphy in the Coming 2 America trailer right here:
Eddie Murphy is back as Akeem, the prince of Zamunda. Along with him is his faithful servant Semmi. Together, they must return once again to the United States in order to find Akeem’s long-lost son. Why? Because he is now the rightful heir to the kingdom of Zamunda. Murphy is also bringing back the many characters he and Arsenio Hall played in the original film that required makeup appliances. This includes the old men at the barbershop, the lead singer of the band Sexual Chocolate, and the over-excited Reverend Brown.

Coming 2 America looks quite good! Comedy sequels are often an extremely difficult thing to pull off, but Eddie Murphy has been proving he still has the magic that made him a superstar in the first place. And Arsenio Hall looks equally energized by this return to the movie that helped make him a household name. The trailer is mostly setting up the premise and assuring viewers that the things they loved about the original film will be making a return in the sequel.
But there are some new elements that look like they could add some good surprises to the mix. Wesley Snipes – who also co-starred with Eddie Murphy in the truly underappreciated Dolemite Is My Name – is going to be joining the cast as General Izzi. Snipes looks to be letting loose with the same kind of verve as everyone else in the trailer. It will be great to see him join forces with the rest of the cast to deliver some much-needed laughs.
Amazon is on a roll with comedy sequels. They recently released Borat Subsequent Moviefilm (read our review) which was a great success for them. The critical and audience reception was very positive. If Eddie Murphy can capture the same magic that Sacha Baron Cohen captured with his second attempt at a cherished comedy character, it could prove to be another feather in Amazon’s streaming cap.
Coming 2 America was originally going to have a theatrical run, but the pandemic forced the Eddie Murphy sequel to recalculate its release strategy. Instead, it will now be available on Amazon Prime Video on March 5, 2021. If the sequel manages to grab more attention and subscribers, could we see this release strategy gain even more traction with modern consumers?
It has been truly heartwarming and reaffirming to see Eddie Murphy back in the spotlight again. After a really fallow period of films, the comic genius has found his groove again. Hopefully, Coming 2 America keeps that wave rolling and we can look forward to even more excellent Eddie Murphy projects down the road.
