Merry Christmas to all The Mandalorian fans out there. The news comes early but the gift arrives on Christmas Day. Disney+ will give fans of their hit show a wonderful treat on December 25th when it airs a brand new Mandalorian Christmas Special. This one will not be a new episode, but an amazing hour-long peek behind the scenes of the making of season 2.
The Mandalorian Christmas Special documentary, which comes a week after the season 2 finale (airing December 18), plans to include interviews with The Mandalorian cast as well as examining the season’s eight episodes. The documentary is called The Making of Season 2 and will also focus on the storytelling decisions made which allowed fans to become fully invested with not only Din Djarin and Grogu, but with returning characters such as Cara Dune and Greef Karga, and Moff Gideon as well as the introduction to Rosario Dawson’s Ahsoka Tano and Timothy Olyphant’s Cobb Vanth. The documentary also plans to showcase some early art concepts and the technology used to create all the amazing visuals season 2 had to offer.
The announcement from Disney is just one of the many Star Wars fans were treated to over the past week. At the Disney Investor’s Day, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy was on hand to drop news about all the new Star Wars adventures that will be soon hitting the Disney+ streaming service. A couple mentioned will be actual spin-offs from The Mandalorian, with one called Rangers of the New Republic and the other a series focused on Dawson’s Ahsoka character, aptly titled Ahsoka. The two new series were included in the announcement in which Kennedy also named Obi-Wan Kenobi, The Bad Batch, Andor, Star Wars: Visions, Lando, The Acolyte, and A Droid Story. Also mentioned (mentioned may be too weak a word here) was the movie Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins will be helming, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron.
The new Mandalorian christmas day special takes a different direction than what Disney produced for the first season of The Mandalorian. They gave fans an 8-episode documentary that was hosted by series creator and executive producer Jon Favreau and showed roundtable conversations Favreau had with the directors of each episode as well as behind-the-scenes footage. We are sure the new documentary will follow the same pattern, just much more condensed.
Disney’s official press release, via Inside The Magic, reads as such:
“From the triumphant return of legendary bounty hunter Boba Fett to the live-action debut of fan-favorite Ahsoka Tano, the second season of “The Mandalorian” is a fun, surprising, emotional thrill-ride which has kept fans excited to see how each new weekly chapter will unfold. Disney+ will bring viewers behind the scenes of the groundbreaking season in a new hour-long “Making of Season Two” special, premiering December 25 on the streaming service.

And as an FYI, amid all the crazy Star Wars announcements, it was also revealed that the premiere for season 3 of The Mandalorian will drop in time for Christmas Day 2021. Merry Christmas again, Mandalorian fans!
