Zack Snyder does appear dead set on making amends (of sorts) for the beginning of the DC Cinematic Universe. It was a bold, but inauspicious start for Snyder and company as they set about resetting things with Superman and then moving forward as the character base expanded. But he’s hard at work righting some of the wrongs. And one of those things includes revamping another film in the universe. It appears Zack Snyder is remastering Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice for iMax screens.
Zack Snyder, along with Stefan Soddenfeld (a professional colorist and rock star in digital remastering), is trying his hand at updating the Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice – Ultimate Edition cut which has acted as a quasi-director’s cut of the film. The two said they are fixing some aspect ratios and bringing more of the colored hue Snyder had wanted in the original. It’s all part of this rebranding of certain parts of the DC cinematic universe that fell flat with critics the first time out.
The remastering differences and examples were teased by Zack Snyder through social media accounts on Sunday. He gave some examples of the original compared to what we’ll see in the new IMAX version.
You can see how some of the visuals around the edges are clearer and more pronounced. The look is definitely brighter and has less of a shadowy tone for what was already a fairly dark movie all things considered.
Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice was a flop with critics, scoring a paltry 28% on Rotten Tomatoes. The $875 million at the box office looks like a huge number, but offsetting the $300 million budget doesn’t make the return all that eye-popping. But, in his defense, Zack Snyder’s Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice – Ultimate Edition scored much better with critics than the original. It tacked on about thirty more minutes, pushing it close to three hours. In that, it added clarity to some of the storylines which branched out rather considerably as they fought to introduce a bunch of new characters. It’s currently available to stream on HBO Max.
And of course, this remastering news is just likely small potatoes compared to what Zack Snyder has in store for the New Year. That’s because his version of Justice League is set to hit HBO Max streaming in January. The much-anticipated Snyder version sets about to eliminate any memory we might have had from the Joss Whedon mess. There are a number of different changes planned, new characters added and storylines expanded. It will debut as a six-episode series which is basically just a six-hour-long movie. It looks ambitious in a way some of the earlier DC cinematic universe works simply weren’t.
Again, Zack Snyder remastering Batman v. Superman is just another sign the director is fully committed to bringing the DC cinematic universe firmly back into the fold and establishing a strong original base. If that means even getting down to the visual level to bring things more into his mind’s eye then we are here for it.
