Margot Robbie Being Brought In To Save Terminator?
Is Margot Robbie about to step into the dystopian future of the Terminator franchise?
This article is more than 2 years old
Last week, we brought you the news that James Cameron is reportedly interested in returning for another installment of Terminator. Now, there is some discussion of Margot Robbie and John Cena being brought on board. Could Margot Robbie be exactly what the franchise needs to gain fresh traction with fans?
The intel comes from We Got This Covered, who have heard that Paramount is discussing how to resurrect the franchise. While we did just see our latest Terminator film in 2019, it was not the box office success the studio was looking for. In fact, you’ll find many lists online simply outlining the reasons for Terminator: Dark Fate’s box office failure. This is unfortunate, particularly since James Cameron had hoped the movie would be the start of a new trilogy. The studio must still believe in the potential there if they plan to try for a seventh film. This time around, it would be good to see them add some fresh, big names, like Margot Robbie and John Cena to the mix.
The shared intel did not actually say the relaunch would necessarily be a film, and We Got This Covered brought up the possibility of a new television series. It’s hard to imagine Margot Robbie has time for that kind of commitment.
The latest news on Robbie’s schedule has her working on one of the two new installments of Pirates of the Caribbean. Christina Hodson, screenwriter for Birds of Prey is also signed on for that project. While Margot Robbie isn’t saying a lot, she has confirmed she is on board and that the new movie will be packed with girl power vibes.
Since breaking out in the 2013 movie The Wolf of Wall Street, Margot Robbie has been busy. She’s played Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey. She was in the Tarrantino film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. She also found time to start her own production company, LuckyChap Entertainment. The company focuses on telling women’s stories on screen.
If Paramount does move forward with a new Terminator project, what would it take to make it the success the franchise really needs? It would be great to see James Cameron brought on as a director or writer, instead of only a producer. He gained his fame from the early Terminator films. It makes sense more direct involvement from him would be a boost. If that were in place, could stars like Margot Robbie drum up more interest? Based on some of her recent acting choices, and the focus of her production company, there would need to be a strong and interesting role for a female character in the story.
Would Arnold Schwarzenegger really return again? It might be better for the franchise to move forward with a new story in the world, with fresh characters. Of course, Schwarzenegger is a powerhouse, but he’s been in quite a few of these now. Maybe what the franchise needs is a new take.
It might just be the kind of thing to get Margot Robbie to put a new Terminator story on her schedule.
