Daisy Ridley and Tom Holland will star together in Chaos Walking, the film adaptation of the sci-fi young-adult novel The Knife of Never Letting Go. The movie has suffered a number of delays and reshoots, but it looks like it is finally on its way to audiences. The first trailer was just released and it offers us our best look at this strange, exciting concept. But, does it sell us on the idea?

Daisy Ridley plays Viola, a mysterious woman who crash lands on a planet where all the women are dead. She meets Todd Hewitt (Tom Holland), a young man who reveals that all the men on the planet are affected by “the Noise“, a strange force that allows all of their thoughts to be put on display. Viola and Todd band together to discover the dark secrets about this planet and exactly what is happening.

This trailer does a good job on selling the audience on the chemistry between lead actors Daisy Ridley and Tom Holland. and the entire concept of a planet – it’s going to be Earth, isn’t it? – where men’s thoughts are ever-present is a great sci-fi idea. However, this looks like a lot of other young-adult sci-fi adaptations that all went by the wayside. In the wake of The Hunger Games, we got a flurry of forgettable young-adult sci-fi adaptations. Unfortunately, Chaos Walking looks like it has more in common with disposed flicks like I Am Number Four, The 5th Wave, and The Darkest Minds than it does a major sci-fi event film.

The production of Chaos Walking has been tumultuous to put it lightly. The movie originally shot with stars Daisy Ridley and Tom Holland back in 2017. Major reshoots were ordered in 2018 but were unable to get underway due to the busy schedules of the film’s leads. The reshoots eventually took place in April 2019 under the direction of Don’t Breathe director Fede Álvarez. The current listed release date for Chaos Walking is January 22, 2021. But, this new trailer decided to jettison an announced release date and end things with a vague “Coming Soon” declaration.

Does this mean that Chaos Walking is going to suffer yet another setback? The film’s original release date was supposed to be March 1, 2019. With all the delays due to reshoots with Daisy Ridley and Tom Holland, it seems like the movie is finally in a watchable cut. But, with movie theaters looking worse with every passing week, will Lionsgate dump this movie into a theatrical distribution market that won’t reward it? OR will they try and mitigate their loss by offering it as a streaming or video-on-demand option as well? With a blockbuster like Wonder Woman 1984 doing that exact thing, it is not infeasible to think a movie like Chaos Walking could consider a similar route.

And with Chaos Walking having spent so much time in production, it is starting to feel like a movie from another era. Though Daisy Ridley and Tom Holland are certainly still popular actors, the movie was supposed to release during the height of their fame and notoriety. It certainly helps having them be the focal characters in the film, but it does not feel like the casting coup it might have been just two years ago. Thankfully, the rest of the cast is equally stellar. Mads Mikkelsen looks to be the main villain and that is a big plus. We can also expect interesting turns from Demián Bichir, Cynthia Erivo, Nick Jonas, Kurt Sutter, and David Oyelowo. There is no denying that Chaos Walking has a killer ensemble.

Are audiences going to be energized by Chaos Walking? Will the inclusion of Daisy Ridley, Tom Holland, and the rest of the noteworthy cast be a strong enough selling point for many consumers? And if the January 2021 release date has been pulled, exactly when can we expect to see Chaos Walking? And will it show up in theaters or go to a streaming platform/video-on-demand? We will simply have to wait and see what will become of this unique sci-fi film.
