Quentin Tarantino has been adamant that he will only direct ten of his own movies and then leave the world of filmmaking. After Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, he only has one more signature film left. What else will he do after that? Well, it turns out that he might have plans to become an author. And one of those books would actually be an adaptation.
Quentin Tarantino has signed a two-book deal with prolific publisher HarperCollins. One of those books will be a non-fiction collection of essays, reviews, and personal writing titled Cinema Speculation. The other will be a novelization of Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood. According to the director, the first adult books he read were movie novelizations in the 1970s. He hopes to honor that sub-genre by doing his own version of a novelization with his most recent film.
It is not surprising to hear that Quentin Tarantino would be interested in becoming a novelist. The writer/director is best known for his dialogue-heavy scripts and descriptive writing style. Just take a look at any of his commercially available screenplays like The Hateful Eight or Inglourious Basterds, and you will see how his particular approach to writing films would actually fit right in with the world of novels.
What is really interesting about this piece of news is the fact that Quentin Tarantino intends to release a novelization far after its source material has been released. Normally, movie novelizations come out shortly before a film’s release or very close to it. With Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood getting such a delayed novelization, one has to wonder how different the book will be from the finished movie. Will Tarantino use this opportunity to showcase sequences he was unable to film? Or will he be manipulating the story even further with brand new plot elements he came up with after the fact?
And the truly exciting facet of this story is the possibility that Quentin Tarantino could transition from being a filmmaker to a novelist. If he decides to stick with his decree of only writing/directing ten of his own movies – we know he’s kind of gone over that – what would he plan to do after he retires from the world of cinema? Becoming a full-time writer sounds like a great way for his fans to still absorb his storytelling, In fact, the medium of the novel would offer Tarantino the chance to possibly tell the kinds of stories he was never able to in film for any variety of reasons. And as far as his non-fiction writing is concerned, film fans will be more than happy to read his thoughts about movies both past and present.
It is going to be a very surreal experience to read Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood after the movie has been out for so long. The novelization is currently scheduled to release next summer. We can guarantee you that we will be devouring a copy as soon as it hits bookshelves.
