Harrison Ford is coming back to play daring archeologist Indiana Jones. Indiana Jones 5 is currently in development, and a new report from insider Daniel Richtman (via We Got This Covered) says the fifth installment in the franchise is scheduled to begin production next August.
If that is true, we would not be seeing Indiana Jones 5 until 2022 at the earliest. The sequel is set to release in theaters in June 2022, but it is highly unlikely that it is going to make that date. Plus, there is the issue surrounding Harrison Ford himself. The actor is currently 78 years old. That would mean he would be 80 by the time Indiana Jones 5 hits the big screen. Exactly how much mileage is left for the actor as this character?
We saw Harrison Ford return to his other iconic genre character, Han Solo, in Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens and Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker. He certainly showed that he still has the energy and charisma for these kinds of roles, but Indiana Jones is often a far more physically demanding gig. Would Indiana Jones 5 be using a lot of digital doubling for Ford’s action scenes? At this point, it’s hard to imagine Ford being able to do a lot of the swashbuckling acrobatics that often come with the Indiana Jones movies.
Besides Harrison Ford, we know that Logan director James Mangold is currently set to direct this fifth Indiana Jones adventure. Steven Spielberg was originally set to direct but ended up leaving the project. As such, Indiana Jones 5 will be the first film in the series to not be directed by Spielberg. That alone makes it a notable entry. It is also assumed that Indiana Jones 5 will attempt to reconcile some of the divisive opinions that were generated from the last film, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. That movie left the franchise on an extremely controversial note as far as reception is concerned. The hope is that Indiana Jones 5 would act as a better sendoff for the character.
Still, it is worth believing that Indiana Jones 5 might not see the light of day. Along with Harrison Ford’s age, the movie has continued to be delayed and pushed back for a variety of reasons. Its original announced release date was July 19, 2019. With the coronavirus pandemic still affecting film development and production, it would not be surprising to hear that the movie suffered another delay. And at that point, you have to wonder how much energy Harrison Ford even has for the project.
As of now, Indiana Jones 5 is supposedly set to begin shooting next year. With everything in such flux, we are going to be hedging our bets with this one. Still, if we actually do get to see Harrison Ford wear that stylish hat one last time, we will be the first in line at the movie theater. Assuming there are still movie theaters.
