Former real-life California Governor, and on screen Terminator Arnold Schwarzenegger is coming to the world’s biggest streaming service with a new spy series.
Netflix outbid a few other outlets in order to nab Arnold Schwarzenegger’s spy series, which is being produced by Skydance Television and series creator Nick Santora. Santora, who created the hit series Scorpion, is bringing the as of yet unnamed spy series to Netflix via his overall deal with Skydance Television. At the moment Santora is also the executive producer and showrunner for Amazon’s Jack Ryan series. Santora will fill the same roles for the Schwarzenegger series.
Arnold Schwarzenegger himself has a long-standing relationship with Skydance as he starred in two Terminator movies, Terminator: Genisys and Terminator: Dark Fate, for Skydance. Schwarzenegger will also executive produce the series along with Skydance’s Bill Bost, David Ellison, and Dana Goldberg.
This is a major coup for Skydance and Netflix as it will mark the first time the 73-year old actor has been part of a major scripted television project. Other than Terminator: Dark Fate and the little noticed Iron Mask, Arnold Schwarzenegger has been fairly quiet lately when it comes to feature films.
Not much is known about the new series other than it is a “global spy adventure” and it centers around a father (Arnold Schwarzenegger) and his daughter. Monica Barbaro has been chosen to play Schwarzenegger’s daughter. She too has ties to Skydance after starring in the still-waiting-to-be-released but somehow already a smash hit Top Gun: Maverick. Skydance co-produced Maverick along with Paramount Pictures. Barbaro plays the solo female fighter pilot in Maverick but is a true veteran of television. The 30-year old actress has seen time on UnReal, Chicago Justice, Chicago P.D., The Good Cop, Splitting Up Together, and Stumptown, so she certainly knows her way around a TV series. Maybe she can give Arnie a few points.
It’s inevitable that this new series will draw comparisons to one of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s biggest hits, True Lies, where he was directed by good friend James Cameron. Cameron directed him in the original Terminator and its sequel Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Fans of True Lies and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Harry Tasker have been begging for a sequel pretty much since the movie premiered in 1994. But they were never to get one even though Arnold has seen plenty of other action in the spy action-adventure genre.
While Arnold Schwarzenegger has been low-key the past few years, his future is looking a bit more active. On top of this new series, Schwarzenegger is slated to appear as the President in the movie Kung Fury 2 and he will also reprise his role as Julius Benedict opposite Danny DeVito’s Vincent Benedict, two characters from the movie Twins. This time, the “brothers” find out they have another brother. He will be played by Eddie Murphy in the upcoming Triplets.
Another recently announced project for the former Mr. Universe and Mr. Olympia is his return swords and sandals as Conan in The Legend of Conan. How the 73-year old Arnold Schwarzenegger will fare as the legendary sword and sorcery hero will be interesting, especially since he recently underwent surgery to receive a new aortic valve.
