Life Day is coming up on November 17th, and to celebrate, Disney+ is bringing us The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special. Announced this past summer, they are finally giving us a trailer and our first look at a cross-timeline event full of strange reunions and familiar characters.
Watch the trailer for The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special right here:
While The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special jumps across the timeline, we are joining Rey just after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. It’s Life Day, a holiday celebration on the Wookie homeworld, Kashyyyk. After visiting a Jedi Temple, Rey travels through time to meet up with iconic characters for some of their biggest moments in Star Wars history. In the trailer, we see Rey visiting Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, and we get a look at a very sassy Palpatine.
If you are wondering about Life Day and where you’ve heard that before, then your mind has not yet blocked out the memory of the original Star Wars Holiday Special from 1978!
The first Star Wars Holiday Special is nearly impossible to find. Disney+ isn’t streaming it. It was never released on DVD and the special has been infamously criticized. George Lucas asked people not to mention it to him. Mark Hamill didn’t want to do it in the first place, but went along as a favor to George Lucas when he asked him directly to take part. It was an exceptionally odd movie, even for a holiday special in the late 1970s. There was singing. There were weird cameos. It was an event that could make you go, “Huh?”
So clearly, if they were going to do a fresh take on The Star Wars Holiday Special, they had to lean in and just go as quirky as possible, right? That’s the vibe the trailer gives off. When talking to Entertainment Weekly, executive producer James Waugh said that normally story groups stay far away from doing anything that might mess with the cohesion of Star Wars. They were excited to get to do something “charming and fun” that got to play with the timeline.
The new trailer is certainly charming and fun, and looks like the creative team threw everything had a ton of fun playing with the Star Wars universe in a more open, playful way. The trailer clearly includes Legos, but also messing around with the Star Wars timeline, multiple Obi-Wan Kenobis, and Little Baby Yoda. At this point, Disney+ must recognize that fans would like to see Little Baby Yoda whenever and wherever they can.
While the new Star Wars Holiday Special has these major players, you can also expect to see Rose Tico, voiced by Kelly Marie Tran, as well as Billy Dee Williams as Lando Calrissian.
Disney+ seems to be leaning into the strangeness of the first Star Wars Holiday Special with this new Life Day celebration. The creators are letting loose making fun of their own universe, both in this trailer and the movie posters so far. A month back, Disney released a poster where Darth Vader gifted Luke Skywalker with a Lego hand. Between that and this two-minute trailer, complete with a topless Lego Kylo Ren, the movie promises to be memorable.
