Keanu Reeves Going To Netflix For This Sci-Fi Series?
Keanu Reeves could be headed to Netflix for this incredibly popular sci-fi series.

Keanu Reeves made his action movie bones essentially playing a character in a big video game in The Matrix. Sure, that one involved him entering a computer simulation and learning some cheat codes along the way before facing the Big Boss (Agent Smith). The philosophical nature of being human in a machine along with a solid love arc took it beyond the realm of your standard video game fare for sure, but when it was all said and done the movie was reminiscent of a video game style. It laid the groundwork for action movies going forward and remains at the height of the genre. And now it looks like Reeves might get a chance to star in an *actual* video game adaptation coming soon, Cyberpunk 2077.
Cyberpunk 2077, published and created by CD Projekt SA, is based on the popular role-playing game of the same name. It is based on an alternate reality in which megacorporations have seized control and the world has become a bit of a biological, environmental, and societal mess. Characters navigate a landscape where biomechanics and enhancements are ways to “level up” and there are a number of moral quandaries to ponder when it comes to surviving in the world. Think futuristic Dungeons & Dragons with a number of built-in elements and larger world-building arcs that distinguish it from some other RPGs. Keanu Reeves feels like he’d fit right in here in both look and general broodiness.
CD Projekt SA is responsible for a number of other popular games over the last 13 years. They have all three Witcher games, which you non-video gamers might recognize as already having an adaptation on Netflix. That’s because both are based on the book of the same name. The Netflix adaptation was wildly popular on the streaming service following Geralt of Rivia. For their 2019 fourth-quarter report, Netflix reported the show had 76 million viewers which hit a high watermark, making it the most-streamed show ever on the platform.
The Keanu Reeves rumors here, while exciting, could also be a little premature. After all, Cyberpunk 2077 hasn’t even hit game consoles yet. There have been a number of different delays in production so far with some difficulties delivering it to all platforms. But the last word has assurances the game will release on December 10th.
As it stands, Keanu Reeves is setting himself to maybe go down as the biggest action star of our time. That feels a bit weird to say considering where the guy began. But at this point, he’s in the discussion with no real plans on slowing down. The Matrix 4 is currently filming and Reeves has intimated that might even be a prequel. Regardless of which timeline the movie takes, you can be certain Lana Wachowski pulls out all the stops in what will surely be one of the more anticipated movies around when it hits screens.
Besides just The Matrix films, Keanu Reeves has also raked in monster dollars and fans as John Wick. Eschewing the futuristic vibe and going more for a full-on body count, the flicks have been wildly successful at both the box office and with critics. With three frenetic films under his belt so far, there’s more on the way. Even with hints that it might be the end for Reeves’s Wick, the franchise run is remarkable.
This isn’t the only Cyberpunk collaboration possibly in the works. Rumors have Netflix also considering a Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime series based on the world. Little is known about Edgerunners at this point except it might follow a street kid in the world and director Hiroyuki Imaishi is at the helm with a tentative 2022 release date. Would a Keanu Reeves-like character appear? His Neo character looked like a video game at certain points in The Matrix: Reloaded so it isn’t a stretch.
If it came to fruition, Cyberpunk 2077 would easily vault to the top of the most anticipated films on Netflix. Between the world, some big-name players, and tons of ways to take the story we need to keep an eye out for news as the game starts to hit platforms. And adding Keanu Reeves would only further cement his increased standing as one of the top action leads of our time. He’s come a long way from Ted “Theodore” Logan.
