Saved by the Bell, in all its cheesiness and ridiculous nature, captured the hearts of children of the 90s. With iconic (feels crazy to say that) characters like Zack Morris, A.C. Slater, and Kelly Kapowski launching the careers of Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Mario Lopez, and Tiffani Thiessen (among others) the show has become something of a touchstone for the bygone decade. It’s really something considering it was about as corny a show as we will ever get. Now, a new generation of viewers will get a chance to visit Bayside High with a new look. The first trailer for the Saved by the Bell reboot is here, and frankly, it looks spectacular.

This version of Saved by the Bell exists in the same universe, bringing back a number of the original cast to reprise their previous roles now as adults. Airing on Peacock (NBC’s streaming service), the show will have Zack who is now the Governor of California and whose kid is a high school student at the school. They seem to share many of the same trappings of appearance and popularity.
Meanwhile, A.C. is back as Bayside’s newly-hired wrestling coach. From the trailer, it appears he’s had some arrested development and is still looking to recapture some of the high school glory days.
And finally, Elizabeth Berkley, who’s been mostly out of the acting game, in recent years is back as the book smart Jesse Spano. She’s taken over for Mr. Belding as the school’s principal.
Where the original Saved by the Bell was a byproduct of the decade, seeking to be a comedy without always realizing the joke was actually on them, the newest reboot looks like it embraces the unintentional laughs. The older characters are almost caricatures of the originals which is where the show mines its hilarity.
In the trailer, we already have several hat-tips to the original Saved by the Bell. Max is back using his magic to oddball uses at The Max and there’s even a cover of the gang’s “Friends Forever” playing over in the background. I’m sure the rest of the show spends a lot of its time poking fun at the hijinks of the original.
Noticeably absent from this reboot is the aforementioned Thiessen though she’s set for a return at some point in the season. But also missing are Lark Vorhees’s Lisa Turtle who won’t be returning and says she’s a bit hurt by the snub. And finally, and maybe most notably is the exclusion of Dustin Diamond’s Screech. It’s not all that surprising he won’t return considering the legal trouble (and even jail time) he’s seen in his time since leaving the show.
Besides just the trailer, there’s reason to expect very funny things from this Saved by the Bell reboot. Peacock has already put out one hilarious show with AP Bio and this latest looks to follow the same whip-smart, devil-may-care approach to interactions and silliness. Unlike the original show, this reboot appears geared more towards the adults who’ve seen their comedic palates expand over the years.
We are about a month away from Saved by the Bell hitting the screen with a debut date of November 25th. It’s going to be a great trip down memory lane seeing the old cast while also offering a chance to make fun of our original selves much like the show does with the characters.
