John Boyega does not exactly have the fondest feelings when it comes to his experience as the character of Finn in the Star Wars franchise. The actor has spoken out about his difficult struggles when he took on the role and the response from bigots that he received when he was revealed to be a Stormtrooper. Add to that his feeling that his character, along with the other BIPOC characters in the recent Star Wars trilogy films, were pushed to the side and you can totally understand why he would not want to return to the franchise any time soon.

But, a recent interview with Yahoo! News has John Boyega mentioning the one way he would be interested in returning to the Star Wars franchise. Boyega mentioned that Disney/Lucasfilm has been doing very well with The Mandalorian series on Disney+, and he then goes on to say that doing “an animated show would be dope! We could do it from home.” This seems to be the only way the actor would be interested in returning to the series in any capacity, if he can do it at home in his underwear.

Would John Boyega returning as Finn in an animated series be an actual possibility? We know that Disney has decided to shift its production focus towards streaming endeavors. Could an animated return for Finn be in the cards? Kelly Marie Tran, who also received terrible treatment in The Rise of Skywalker, will be returning to the character of Rose Tico in a brand new animated holiday special later this year. Perhaps it is that very project that got John Boyega to consider how he would be willing to return to the series.

It is a shame that John Boyega had such a bad experience during his time on the new Star Wars trilogy films. While he maintains that his character and arc were sidelined after The Force Awakens, Finn’s story had an exceptionally poignant and prominent role in The Last Jedi. It is only in The Rise of Skywalker where his character seems to have reached a point of total redundancy and disinterest. Hopefully, Boyega will be able to see that it was only the final film in the trilogy that treated him as poorly as he feels.

There will surely be a re-evaluation and reappraisal towards the sequel trilogy as time movies on. Hopefully, that will include a deeper look at how John Boyega and the character of Finn were utilized. Boyega is an exceptionally talented actor – if you have not seen the film Attack the Block, you are missing out on one of the best films of the last decade – and it is a genuine travesty that he feels his character and talents were wasted in the Star Wars sequel trilogy.

We hope that John Boyega can either move on from his experience with the Star Wars franchise or find a way to reconcile with it. If that means having him return to the role of Finn in some animated fashion, that would be perfectly okay with us. If not, we still wish him all the best and can’t wait to see what he does next.
