The top Netflix movie of the year might have you going, "Yeesh!"

Netflix instituted a Top 10 feature earlier this year and it has been a fascinating way to gauge exactly what is popular on the (arguably) most popular streaming platform in the world. Of course, there are no third-party companies that validate any of the data Netflix puts out there, so we have to take some of this with a grain of salt. However, website What’s On Netflix has gone through as many metrics as possible and determined which movie is the most popular of the year on Netflix, according to their own Top 10 feature.

After calculating all the data they could collect together, What’s On Netflix determined that the Polish film 365 Days is the most popular film on Netflix in 2020. So, what is 365 Days? Well, we happen to have a trailer here and though only about half of it is in English, it should give you a decent idea of what is going on in the movie:

So… uh, yeah. The most popular film on Netflix in 2020 is about a Sicilian Mafia figure kidnapping a woman and imprisoning her with the caveat that she has 365 days to fall in love with him. Of course, her imprisonment means that she is welcome to an incredible life of luxury thanks to her captor’s successful life of crime. There also looks to be some direct BDSM moments and some other elements seemingly lifted from the Fifty Shades of Grey movies.

Yes, the most popular movie on Netflix in this dumpster inferno of a year is a Fifty Shades of Grey knockoff that could be even more problematic than the story it is ripping off. The critical response to 365 Days seems to be pretty abysmal at both IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes. But, this looks to be the movie most people are watching on the streaming platform.

Is there something of value we can learn from this information? Is it as simple as a reaffirmation of the old marketing axiom, “Sex sells.”? It is clear that the salacious nature of 365 Days has captivated a worldwide audience. Though, it is commendable that a non-American production is the most popular film on the platform. The runner-up was the Netflix film The Old Guard, which was beaten by nearly 3x more points according to the calculations done by What’s On Netflix.

It should be noted that the most popular movie on Netflix in 2020 in the United States is not 365 Days. That honor goes to library title Despicable Me. It seems that Americans aren’t quite as enamored with the Polish erotic drama. They would prefer to see a cartoon Steve Carell supervillain than… whatever is happening in 365 Days.

We have not watched 365 Days so we can’t make a full review of the film itself, but it doesn’t look like the kind of movie you would expect to dominate Netflix in 2020. But, this is a trash fire of a year. Perhaps it deserves a movie that could be as equally repellant and unappealing as the events of this year itself.
