Alyson Hannigan has had a storied and successful career, but many fans will always remember her as the wonderful witch Willow in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Hannigan managed to snag a number of memorable props from the show after it concluded. That is not uncommon for the end of many productions, but what Hannigan decided to do with the props is pretty darn awesome.
In a recent phone interview with EW Live, Alyson Hannigan spoke about what props she managed to procure after Buffy the Vampire Slayer. “We’ve got all the tombstones that were on our little fake Buffy graveyard,” said Hannigan. While that alone is cool enough to merit mentioning, what Hannigan ended up doing with the tombstones is even cooler.
“So that is a lot of my Halloween decorations. I have a lot of Buffy props that help decorate our house for Halloween, which is very cool because our graveyard is real spooky,” revealed Alyson Hannigan. That’s right. If you decided to traipse on past Hannigan’s home in the month of October, you would get to see some of the actual graveyard props that made up the iconic cemeteries in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. That would be a treat for any fan of the show.
But, it is not just headstones that Alyson Hannigan managed to get a hold of when Buffy the Vampire Slayer ended its celebrated run back in 2003. She even obtained some skeleton props that were used to adorn the lair of the Master, the first main antagonist of the series. Although, it sounds like those skeletons are starting to decay just like actual human remains. According to Hannigan, those props have become pretty “crumbly” over the years. That is not surprising considering that the show premiered in 1997. Those skeletons are over 20 years old at this point!
It is great to hear that Alyson Hannigan is using those props as a way to celebrate Halloween instead of having them closeted away somewhere. Movie and television props are a fascinating way to remember some of our favorite pieces of cinematic fiction. They are relics of a project that meant something important to so many people. Hiding those kinds of objects away from the world is selfish and only ensures that the legacy of such a project will somehow diminish. With Hannigan displaying the props every Halloween, she is helping to keep the spirit of Buffy the Vampire Slayer alive every year.
It is especially appropriate considering that Buffy the Vampire Slayer is so deeply tied to imagery and concepts that we all associate with Halloween. In fact, Alyson Hannigan even admitted that it was difficult for her to recall some of the specific Halloween episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer because the entire show was like a constant infusion of Halloween episodes. “The show just always felt a lot like Halloween, because we always had scary monsters and graveyards and stuff,” said Hannigan.
Hopefully, this Halloween season can bring even more new fans to Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It is always great to see such shows find a new audience in every generation. Thankfully, Alyson Hannigan is doing her part to keep the spirit of Sunnydale alive every Halloween. If that Buffy reboot ever happens, maybe she can give them some of her tombstones!
