It is said that nothing in this world is certain, except death and taxes. It might be time to add “M. Night Shyamalan making another movie” to that idiom.
The Oscar-nominated director has just announced he has begun production on his next film, entitled Old. Even though the film is currently filming, Old already has a teaser posted, which includes the tagline, “It’s only a matter of time,” and a threatened release date of July 2021.
The poster bears some probably intentional similarities to this alternate poster for Split, one of M. Night’s previous movies…
M. Night Shyamalan debuted the Old poster, alongside a photo of him with a clapperboard on set. Here’s the tweet…
Collider revealed that M. Night Shyamalan’s Old will be inspired by Sandcastle, an R-rated French graphic novel by Pierre Oscar Levy and artist Frederik Peeters. The description of Sandcastle on the graphic novel site, Self Made Hero reads:
“Early morning on a perfect summer’s day, people begin to descend on an idyllic, secluded beach. Among their number, a family, a young couple, a refugee and some American tourists. Its fine white sand is fringed with rock pools filled with crystal clear water. The beach is sheltered from prying eyes by green-fringed cliffs that soar around the cove. But this utopia keeps a dark secret.
“A woman’s body is found floating in the waters, which brings these thirteen strangers together to try and unravel the riddle of the sands and escape the beach alive in this tense, fantastical mystery.”
Fantasy and mystery, combined with what sounds like horror elements? Sounds like the M. Night Shyamalan special!
In October 2019, Deadline first reported that M. Night Shyamalan had two new films on the way with Universal Studios. Shyalaman’s three most recent films – The Visit, Split and Glass – were made with Universal.
M. Night Shyamalan tweeted on June 24, 2017, “Next up to read to inspire #Glass writing,” which included a collection of various graphic novels. Amongst those books was Sandcastle, alongside such other critically-acclaimed graphic novels as Brian K. Vaughn’s Saga and Paper Girls, Fábio Moon’s Daytripper, Forbidden Brides of the Faceless Slaves in the Secret House of the Night of Dread Desire by Neil Gaiman, and Last Look by Charles Burns.
M. Night Shyamalan’s Old is currently being filmed in the Dominican Republic and already boasts an impressive cast. Old will feature Gael García Bernal (Mozart in the Jungle), Eliza Scanlen (2019’s Little Women), Thomasin McKenzie (Jojo Rabbit), Aaron Pierre (Krypton), Alex Wolff (Hereditary), Vicky Krieps (Phantom Thread), Abbey Lee (Mad Max: Fury Road), Nikki Amuka-Bird (Avenue 5), Ken Leung (Lost), Rufus Sewell (Dark City), Embeth Davidtz (Army of Darkness), and Emun Elliott (Prometheus).
M. Night Shyamalan’s career has been on somewhat of an upswing lately. After a string of critically and financially disappointing films like 2008’s The Happening, 2010’s The Last Airbender and 2013’s After Earth, Shyamalan’s 2015 film, The Visit was a modest success that helped rehabilitate his career. But it was 2016’s Split – Shyamalan’s secret sequel to his 2000 film, Unbreakable – that found a huge audience for the writer-director once more, earning $278 million worldwide.
The third film in this trilogy, 2019’s Glass, made over $247 million around the world, despite tepid reviews. M. Night Shyamalan also directed three episodes of his Apple+ series, Servant, which debuted last year. In addition to Old, Shyamalan has also announced a film called Labor of Love, which would reunite him with The Sixth Sense and Glass star Bruce Willis, but since it was unveiled in 2014, word on this upcoming film has been relatively quiet.
M. Night Shyamalan’s Old is currently slated for a July 23, 2021 release date, unless it gets released early or later as some sort of twist.
