Charlie Cox could be returning to the character of Daredevil thanks to a rights issue with streaming giant Netflix getting resolved.
Back in 2018, fans of the Netflix series Daredevil were shocked when the hit series was abruptly and unceremoniously canceled. Why Netflix decided to move on is an unknown – they don’t typically comment on these things – but The Man Without Fear was done. Since that time, efforts to bring Daredevil and the man who played him, Charlie Cox, into the Marvel Cinematic Universe fold has been ongoing. The holdup has been Netflix’s two-year stranglehold they’ve had on the character. In December, that hold will no longer exist.
The rights Netflix had on the Marvel character will expire in December, which means discussions about bringing Matt Murdoch back home to Marvel where he belongs can commence. This is great news not only for the character of Daredevil but the fact that Marvel Studios head honcho, Kevin Feige, will be in control. This also bodes well for Cox, whom most fans consider the one and only Daredevil. It is said that once December rolls around, contract discussions between Marvel Studios and Charlie Cox will take place.
Daredevil was an immediate hit for the streaming giant Netflix when it first arrived. In fact, all three seasons were very successful, which is why it was and still is puzzling that Netflix would cancel such a popular show.
While Netflix didn’t give specifics, its statement (via Deadline) regarding the cancellation also held some prophetic words. “Marvel’s Daredevil will not return for a fourth season on Netflix. We are tremendously proud of the show’s last and final season and although it’s painful for the fans, we feel it best to close this chapter on a high note. We’re thankful to our partners at Marvel, showrunner Erik Oleson, the show’s writers, stellar crew and incredible cast including Charlie Cox as Daredevil himself, and we’re grateful to the fans who have supported the show over the years. While the series on Netflix has ended, the three existing seasons will remain on the service for years to come, while the Daredevil character will live on in future projects for Marvel.”
Marvel even echoed Netflix’s last sentiments in their statement from 2018, also via Deadline: “Marvel is extremely grateful to the huge audience that loved Marvel’s Daredevil. From the moment of young Matt’s first act of heroism to the birth of Page, Murdock, & Nelson, it has been an unbelievable journey. We are incredibly proud of the amazing showrunners and writers starting with Drew Goddard and Steven DeKnight, Marco Ramirez and Doug Petrie and Erik Oleson, Charlie Cox, Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson, Vincent D’Onofrio and our casts who brought our characters to life with such excellence, and every one of the fantastic crews in NYC. We look forward to more adventures with the Man without Fear in the future.”
It’s not only the fans would hold excitement about the possibility of Charlie Cox returning as Daredevil. You also can count Vincent D’Onofrio in his corner. D’Onofrio played Wilson Fisk, aka Kingpin, with sadistic glee had this to say to Comicbook about Cox, “The obvious one, which is Daredevil, I still believe in Charlie Cox as Daredevil. And I think that if they do a Daredevil film or have a Daredevil in one of their films, I only hope that it’s Charlie, because I believe in him as Daredevil, I loved working with that guy.”
He also added this about Cox, “Not just because he’s a great guy, but because he’s a fine actor. A lot of people, I guess they don’t realize because they’re not actors that what it’s like to be on set with somebody that’s good, really good. And it’s a whole different experience than it is when you’re with somebody that’s, eh. Charlie was on it every day. We were together on it all the time, which brings us both up a notch.”
All this Daredevil news comes on the heels of Marvel Studios also regaining the rights to both Luke Cage and Iron Fist in the upcoming month. Insiders are also saying that there is much interest in Mike Colter (Evil) returning to his role as Luke Cage.
