Stargate Is Close To Giving Us A New Series
Is a new Stargate series on the horizon? Two key creatives give us an update.

Stargate finally getting a new series? It is looking more believable than ever. The hibernating sci-fi series might actually be getting close to a new iteration. Executive producer Joseph Mallozzi recently talked to fans on Reddit and the updates he gave were highly encouraging.
In an effort to speak in a language Stargate fans would immediately grasp, Mallozzi said that the new show has “five chevrons locked.” Earlier in July, Mallozzi mentioned that they had never been closer to getting a fourth series up and running. Though the COVD-19 pandemic likely affected some of the project’s momentum, Mallozzi remains confident that the franchise can get a new show off the ground.
Stargate SG-1 co-creator Brad Wright has been working on a new project for close to two years. According to Mallozzi, this endeavor has been referred to as a series. Exactly what kind of a series or how long would it be projected to last? We don’t know just yet. But, Mallozzi did confirm that this series would allow for “familiar faces” to make a return to the franchise. That also means it would acknowledge the previous shows as canon and would not act as a reboot.
That also means that there are plans to address the dangling storylines from Stargate Universe. The last series in the franchise debuted in 2009 and was canceled after its second season. Though there was a comic book series that picked up from the show’s end, Wright and Mallozzi were not involved in that.
MGM had announced plans to reboot Stargate on the big screen back in 2014. Original creators Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin were on board and Emmerich was announced to direct. However, Devlin said that progress had stalled on the feature film reboot back in 2016. Since then, there have not been any significant reports of MGM moving forward with a feature film reboot of the franchise.
Part of the issue with a new Stargate series is where it would make its home. In that same Reddit thread, Mallozzi urged fans that they may want to start petitioning some of the bigger streaming entities such as Amazon, Apple, and FOX. It should be no surprise that a new Stargate series would need to find a streaming service where it could thrive. If it ends up getting buried in an overburdened streaming library, it will surely get canceled before too long.
The last we got from the franchise was the web series Stargate Origins back in 2018. Since then, the series has been lying dormant with no new project being given the greenlight. If Mallozzi is to be believed, it sounds like there is a brand new series on the horizon. Would it potentially act as a way to cap off the entirety of the Stargate world as we know it?
Hopefully, the world can get back to normal and we can get a new Stargate series out of the deal. Once film and television productions start to get back in the swing of things, we will have to see if this Stargate series will be a priority for whatever outlet it ends up at.
