Celebrities love a good movement. No, we are not talking about a cleansing here, though perhaps in some eyes it could be looked at that way. We are talking about a cause, something they can get behind or be in front of. Fans of said celebrities can be just as rabid about it, if not more. We can now count singer, dancer, actress Britney Spears as one involved in such a movement. Social media has convinced itself that Britney Spears is being held prisoner. So #FreeBritney.

Yes, that’s the reason why you may have noticed the #FreeBritney hashtag popping up with regularity on social media. It’s not because she has a new album ready to drop called “Free”, it’s not because she is starring in a movie of the same name. No, the #FreeBritney hashtag continues to appear because while Spears is one of the most recognizable and popular faces on the planet, she virtually has no control of her own life.

Britney Spears’ father James Spears (aka Jamie), was granted a conservatorship over her. That means pretty much everything the singer touches – her money, her health, her daily routine, everything that encompasses Britney Spears, he controls.

The conservatorship in question dates back to 2008 after Britney Spears was put on a 5150 involuntary psychiatric hold. After this hold, the singer was later placed under the conservatorship of both her father and attorney Andrew Wallet. Yes, an attorney with the last name Wallet.

Shortly after the conservatorship was granted, Britney Spears was back working, opening the MTV Awards, guest-starring on How I Met Your Mother, releasing a new album, all while filming a documentary. And this is when those who started the #FreeBritney movement began to claim she was being exploited.

Things really picked up steam when Britney Spears posted this odd video on Instagram…

Fans began to suspect Britney was sending coded messages, so they then asked her to wear specific things in her next videos as a way of letting them know if she was in trouble and needed help. Britney seemed to respond by wearing the colors they requested.

BRITNEY SPEARS FIGHTING FOR CONTROL

#FreeBritney

Whether the #FreeBritney conspiracy is real or not, it’s now clear that Britney Spears wants control of her own life. In March of 2019, the first move toward that happened when Wallet resigned as her co-conservator.

In a statement via The Blast, Wallet said, “The conservatorship is engaged in numerous ongoing business activities requiring immediate attention and it therefore is in the best interest of the conservatee that the acceptance of Wallet’s resignation and the issuance of amended letters of conservatorship of the estate occur immediately and without delay.” He also added in his statement, “Substantial detriment, irreparable harm and immediate danger will result to the conservatee and her estate if the relief requested herein in not granted on an ex parte basis.”

Shortly after that, Britney Spears’ father filed a request to temporarily relieve himself of the duties of sole conservator, citing health reasons. He was battling a colon condition that prompted Britney Spears to cancel her Las Vegas residency and surprisingly (or not) check herself into a mental health facility in efforts to cope with her father’s declining health. #FreeBritney went nuts.

From Page Six, a source said, “Britney was having a hard time dealing with her dad’s health issues. Britney hasn’t been drinking or doing drugs or anything, she just has some very difficult emotional and mental health issues. She’s gone away to try to deal with her issues before they get worse.” This father-daughter relationship is quite strange.

In the meantime, Britney’s care manager Jodi Montgomery has taken over Jamie’s duties and this is how Britney wishes it to continue. Earlier this month, Spears’ lawyer Samuel D. Ingham III stated that Britney “is strongly opposed to having [Jamie] return as the conservator of her person” and that she “strongly prefers Jodi ” to remain in that role. Ingham also stated that even though Britney wishes Montgomery to remain in the role as sole conservator, she would like to retain her right to “to seek termination of this conservatorship in the future.”

Britney’s brother Bryan also chimed in on #FreeBritney the As NOT Seen on TV podcast, “She’s been in this thing for quite some time now. Obviously, there was a need for it in the beginning…She’s always wanted to get out of it. It’s very frustrating to have. Whether someone’s coming in peace to help or coming in with an attitude, having someone constantly tell you to do something has got to be frustrating. She’s wanted to get out of it for quite some time.” His take can be seen below.

So, not only does Britney Spears have the #FreeBritney movement behind her, she has support from Wallet, her brother, and from another unlikely source.

THE ACLU WANTS TO HELP #FreeBritney

ACLU

It wasn’t long after Ingham filed the paperwork that court documents were made public. The ACLU took a look at them and then sort of reached out and sort of offered their assistance via Twitter saying: “People with disabilities have a right to lead self-directed lives and retain their civil rights. If Britney Spears wants to regain her civil liberties and get out of her conservatorship, we are here to help her.”

Just how much and how far the ACLU is willing to go to help Britney Spears is an unknown. But it certainly continues to fuel the #FreeBritney movement.
