Get Out 2: Is Jordan Peele Still Making The Sequel?
Get Out 2 appeared to be on the way from Jordan Peele, but there are no current plans for a sequel.
It wasn’t all that long ago that the idea of Jordan Peele directing horror movies would have seemed ridiculous. As one-half of the comedy duo Key & Peele (also the name of their hit Comedy Central show), Jordan Peele had made a name for himself in comedy. But that’s all changed in recent years and it actually has fans clamoring for a follow-up to his first scary flick, wanting to get a Get Out 2 underway.
When Peele made his directorial debut with a script he penned himself, the final product of the movie Get Out became a hit no one expected. That script, by the way, brought Peele Best Picture and Best Director Oscar nominations as well as a Best Original Screenplay nod. He walked away with the hardware in the latter category. With all that in the bank, one would have to think a Get Out 2 has at least been discussed. Here’s what we know.
IT SEEMED AS IF JORDAN PEELE AND JASON BLUM WERE GOING TO MAKE GET OUT 2
2017’s Get Out was produced for a mere $4.5 million. Those numbers are hard to fathom in this day and age of the big-budget movie. What is even more astounding is that the movie generated a $255.5 million gross, making it an extremely profitable release.
Based on those numbers alone, Get Out 2 just HAD to be in the works. Just ask Jason Blum, he of the horror production company Blumhouse, who produced Get Out.
Back in 2018, the horror mega-producer was asked by Variety if the success of Get Out prompted thought of a sequel. “If Jordan wants to do a sequel, I’ll do it in a second, but it has to come from Jordan Peele. I think he’s flirting with the idea,” was how Blum answered.
In fact, his response was probably based on what Peele had said months prior to Blum’s conversation with Variety. “I will definitely, seriously consider it. I love that universe and feel like there’s more story to tell. I don’t know what it is now, but there are some loose ends, if you know the movie,” said Peele to SlashFilm at the time. That was 2018.
GET OUT 2 PLANS STALLED IN 2020
Let’s fast forward to earlier this year when Blum was once again asked about the possibility of a Get Out 2. “That was wishful thinking,” he said to The Observer of his 2018 comments.
“I think that was taken out of context. I think what I said and what I would still say is, I would love to make a Get Out sequel but we would only do it if Jordan wanted to do it and as far as I know, he has no intention of doing that.”
Again, Blum could be referring to another comment made by Peele when he was asked why he turned down a Warner Bros.’ offer to lead a live-action remake of Akira.
To Peele, it was simply, “The real question for me is: Do I want to do pre-existing material, or do I want to do original content? At the end of the day, I want to do original stuff.” It was also back in 2017 that Peele made mention that he had “four other social thrillers that I want to unveil in the next decade.” The 2019 hit Us was the first of the four Peele has planned.
GET OUT LEFT THINGS OPEN FOR THE SEQUEL
So, what if there is a Get Out 2? What could it even look like? We know the Armitage family would not be returning with Chris (Daniel Kaluuya) dispatching the husband and wife (played brilliantly by Bradley Whitford and Catherine Keener).
But what about Rose? That nice little twist that turned Allison Williams’ Rose into a psychopath her parents were proud of also lent her to being spared at the very end by her boyfriend Chris. Did she survive the gunshot? If so, would she play a part? How about Chris’ friend, his TSA agent buddy played for chuckles by Lil Rey Howery? Would he have a role?
The story could focus on Chris again or would Peele might introduce others to the “Sunken Place” via another warped family taking over the Armitage mantle.
With that in mind, just how big a part would Peele need to play in the production? Would he come back as writer/director? Just one or the other? Would he only remain on as a producer? Or could Blumhouse be tempted to make Get Out 2 without him, since Peele doesn’t seem to want to be involved?
It seems there are many more questions than possible answers, especially given the fact that Peele seems to have other movies in mind. Blum looks to be fully on board if Peele ever decides to do Get Out 2.
JORDAN PEELE HAS GONE ON TO DIRECT OTHER HITS SINCE GET OUT
While Get Out 2 doesn’t seem to be coming down the pike anytime soon, it isn’t because Jordan Peele has been taking it easy. Far from it. The writer and director has been churning out movies over the last few years.
His Get Out follow-up was with Us, another movie that looked at racial and social commentary through a horror lens. That movie earned more than $256 million dollars at the box office on *just* a $20 million budget. And while it didn’t land in the same award circles as Get Out, it was still a massive critical hit, sitting at 93% on Rotten Tomatoes.
After that Jordan Peele forewent a Get Out 2 in order to bring Candyman back into our lives. It was a sequel to the 1992 movie of the same name and starred Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Anthony McCoy, the dude trying to get to the bottom of the titular villains mystery. It wasn’t a box office smash in 2021, but we were still at a point when theaters were less than full capacity. Critics were on board for this one just like Peele’s other works.
And in 2022, Jordan Peele came out with Nope, his own take on the alien invasion/ science-fiction genre. The movie’s $68 million budget was bigger than other Peele flicks and it did manage to make over $170 million at the box office. Critics praised the movie as well, sitting it at 83% on Rotten Tomatoes.
In all, Jordan Peele has become one of the premiere voices in the directing and writing world making the thought of a possible Get Out 2 even that much more tantalizing.
What would you rather see? A one-and-done Get Out or perhaps another look into that world with Get Out 2? Some movies need a sequel, some movies stand well on their own. Jordan Peele seems to think Get Out 2 isn’t needed and that his original idea is complete on its own.
