Angelyne

When looking at actress Emmy Rossum “big” would not be a word to describe her. “Petite” would more than likely encompass the actress who got her start in 1997 on the daytime soap opera As the World Turns. So, when word got out that Rossum was circling around the lead role in an NBC series about busty billboard star Angelyne, you can imagine the collective “Huh?” that must have followed. When it comes to physical assets Rossum and the titular Angelyne are complete opposites. But that’s what Hollywood is for, making the unbelievable believable.

The limited series, which Rossum also carries an Executive Producers title along with her husband Sam Esmail (Mr. Robot creator), and Chad Hamilton, will tell the story of Angelyne as she is first developing her path to stardom. The new streaming service will launch shortly (reports say April 15, 2020 for Xfinity users and July 15, 2020 for the rest) but there is no set date for the premiere of Angelyne.

For those unaware of Angelyne’s story, she came into prominence in the mid-1980s. She is a singer, actress, and model but her initial claim to fame was in her appearances in a series of iconic billboards in the Los Angeles area.

Here’s a real Angelyne billboard for comparison…

For the longest time, her real identity was hard to come by. In fact, throughout all her years performing and the many appearances she made, it wasn’t until a 2017 article by Gary Baum of The Hollywood Reporter that her true identity was revealed. In it, Baum was able to uncover Angelyne’s real name is Ronia Tamar Goldberg, born in Poland to Holocaust survivors. It wasn’t until 1959 that her family came to America, finally settling in LA’s Fairfax District. She attended Monroe Senior High School and was then known to friends as Renee Goldberg.

As Angelyne’s “assets” grew, she decided to cash in on them. Her persona, carefully developed, took off officially in 1984 when she began to appear on billboards. She wasn’t selling anything but herself. Prior to this, her career was as a singer. She recorded and released a few no-name songs and that portion of her career stalled. But as her fame began to climb with her billboards, she went back to recording, releasing the 1986 album Driven to Fantasy. From there, Angelyne began to make a name for herself, appearing in bit parts of many films that include Earth Girls Are Easy, The Malibu Beach Vampires, and Wild Horses. She has also appeared in TV shows that include Up All Night and The Roseanne Show.

But she is best known for her billboards and amazingly enough, those have appeared in many movies and TV shows as well. Some of her more well-known billboards have been in Moonlighting, Get Shorty, 8mm and The Day After Tomorrow, which coincidentally happened to star Emmy Rossum. But looking back on Angelyne’s life and career and how she got from there to here, it’s easy to see why Rossum would want to tackle this project.

The show itself, Angelyne, will be a series set to premiere on the new streaming service NBC’s the Peacock. Rossum gave fans a hint of what was to come when she posted a photo of her new look via Twitter.

If Hollywood can do it for Mark Wahlberg’s Dirk Diggler, prosthetically speaking, it looks like they can do the same for Ms. Rossum.
