Jurassic World 3: Dominion Now With More Dinosaurs
We know where we left off in Fallen Kingdom, find out where we're going in Jurassic World 3.
This article is more than 2 years old
Michael Crichton introduced the world to Jurassic Park with his novel back in 1990 and then fed them a second helping, giving in to fan pressure, in 1994. Both novels were huge bestsellers. The first book was so highly anticipated that four movie studios put bids on it for the film rights. Universal and Steven Spielberg came out on top. Little did they know at the time that the first movie would be one of six in a $5 billion franchise. Here comes Jurassic World 3.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom was the fifth movie in a franchise that is now set to introduce fans to number six in 2021. We know where we left off in Fallen Kingdom, what we don’t know is where we are going. Let’s see if we can piece those together and come up with where Jurassic World 3 will take us.
RELEASE DATE
The release of Jurassic World 3 had been set for some time, grabbing a prime summer release of June 11, 2021. But thanks to COVID-19 that date has now been scrapped.
Instead, Jurassic World: Dominion has been delayed an entire year. Now the threequel will release on June 10, 2022.
JURASSIC WORLD: DOMINION FIRST TRAILER
Leading up to the release of Universal Pictures’s F9 in June 2021, they released a special sneak peek clip for Jurassic World 3. It’s only fifteen seconds long, but it promises big things for the movie. Watch the clip below.
The clip teases a few things. First, that this movie is going to have a lot more dinosaurs.
Next, that we’re going back in time, to when dinosaurs ruled the earth. Then, that fans could catch a five-minute extended preview if they saw F9 in IMAX theaters. After long delays, and with a release date still a year out, Universal is back to promoting the upcoming Chris Pratt movie and it’s a wonderful thing.
IS IT CALLED JURASSIC WORLD 3?
While this is the third movie in the Jurassic World series of movies, they aren’t calling it Jurassic World 3. The second movie was called Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and Jurassic World 3 will actually be titled Jurassic World: Dominion.
The full title was first revealed by the movie’s director…
Jurassic World: Dominion Promotion
Our first look at their approach to marketing Jurassic World 3 came in the form of this simple teaser poster…
What’s interesting about this rather plain image is the logo they’ve used with it. They’ve returned to the classic Jurassic Park logo, instead of the more 3D Jurassic World logo which looks like this…
Jurassic World 3 is going old school and I love it. Here’s hoping that aesthetic continues into the movie itself.
2 X 3 = FRANCHISE GOLD
When Jurassic World 3 premieres, it will complete the second trilogy in the franchise. The first film in the first trilogy, Jurassic Park, was based on Crichton’s first novel. The second movie, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, was based on Crichton’s second novel The Lost World. The third movie in this trilogy, simply titled Jurassic Park III, had nothing to work off of. Though it was a commercial success, it received less than positive reviews from its critics. Perhaps that’s why it took fourteen years to start the next trilogy.
There was talk of a fourth movie shortly after Jurassic Park III premiered. Steven Spielberg had an idea for a fourth and they even had a screenwriter hired to write it. There was even a 2005 release date. But like many things in Hollywood, even when there is a high-profile director/producer attached, as was Spielberg, things tend to fade to the background. And a fourth Jurassic Park movie did just that.
Fast forward fourteen years and Jurassic World is upon us to much fanfare. It was the beginning of a new trilogy that would see the director and co-writer Colin Trevorrow (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker) part of all three. He brought a new cast with him; Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard were the two big names. The movie fared well setting up a second movie.
For Jurassic World 2, Jurassic World and Jurassic World 3 director Trevorrow gave up the directing helm to J.A. Bayona though he still keeps his title of co-writer. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom was another smash hit that saw Pratt and Howard reprise their roles. But another key piece of this movie was the anticipated return of Jeff Goldblum and his character Dr. Ian Malcolm. The movie, again, was a hit but fans were less pleased with the relatively small role Goldblum played. Nevertheless, the course was set for a third Jurassic World film.
DIRECTOR AND CO-WRITER
As previously mentioned, Colin Trevorrow will be returning to the trilogy as the director of Jurassic World 3. As you may know, Trevorrow was involved with another big-time trilogy, the reason he was unable to direct Fallen Kingdom.
Trevorrow was busy working on Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker before he was famously let go in favor of J.J. Abrams. Trevorrow was to be both screenwriter and director of Rise but his story didn’t follow Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy’s vision, so she removed him from the project.
Now Trevorrow is back in the big chair, steering another huge franchise to its conclusion. He is also handling the writing chores alongside Emily Carmichael (Pacific Rim: Uprising).
THE RETURNING CAST OF JURASSIC WORLD 3
Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy) makes his third trip to the Jurassic World world as Owen Grady, a Navy vet who found his next calling as an animal behaviorist. He was responsible for training the Velociraptors, more importantly, Blue. When we last saw Grady, he was being pulled from his peaceful existence building a lakeside cabin and brought back to the world of dinosaurs.
Bryce Dallas Howard (Spider-Man 3) returns in Jurassic World 3 as Grady’s ex (or maybe no longer ex) girlfriend Claire Dearing. She had the task of taking Grady from his peaceful existence so he could help save the dinosaurs. So, what was once a lady who profited off these dinosaurs, Claire has come to realize that she cares about these animals.
Howard will have a different look in the new Jurassic World. Here’s how she looked in the previous Jurassic Worlds…
And here’s how she’ll look in Jurassic World 3 where she appears to be going full nerd instead of full corporate tool…
Isabella Sermon returns in Jurassic World 3 as Maisie Lockwood. When she first appeared, she was that mysterious child roaming around the Lockwood Estate. We then find out she is the granddaughter of Benjamin Lockwood, the co-founder of the original Jurassic Park along with John Hammond. And at the end of the movie, we find out her true identity. She is the cloned copy of Lockwood’s daughter, who had died tragically in a car crash. Maisie is also the catalyst that sets the third film in motion as she is the one who released the dinosaurs into the wild.
Daniella Pineda (Cowboy Bebop) and Justice Smith (Pokémon Detective Pikachu) both return to their roles as Zia Rodriguez and Franklin Webb in Jurassic World 3. Rodriguez is the paleo-veterinarian and Webb the former park technician who both helped Grady and Dearing save the dinosaurs.
BD Wong returns in Jurassic World 3 as Dr. Henry Wu, the OG scientist from Jurassic Park. Wu was initially the good doctor who helped John Hammond realize his dream, then Wu went rogue as he became part of InGen and eventually Masrani Global, all in effort to create a second, more successful park. Seeing as that he didn’t die in Fallen Kingdom and he hasn’t paid for all his wrongdoing, might we see a glorious sendoff to his character?
While BD Wong is the thread that connects both trilogies, there are three more, much larger threads that will help Jurassic World 3 bring this trilogy to a close.
JURASSIC WORLD 3’S FRANCHISE VETS
Not only will Jurassic World 3 see the return of Jeff Goldblum (after his cameo in Fallen Kingdom, fans wanted much more!), Jurassic Park vets and the original series heroes, Sam Neill and Laura Dern will also be back, reprising their roles as Dr. Alan Grant and Dr. Ellie Sattler! What a great way to put a cap on the trilogy.
When Sam Neill was asked why his Alan Grant character would be involved with dinosaurs again after barely surviving his previous two encounters, he had this to say to The Guardian: “That’s a good question. I can’t give anything away, but a real-life dinosaur is a compelling thing to someone who has devoted his life to them. There will be screaming. We know this.“
Very Special FX
Jurassic World 3 is putting an emphasis on using practical effects, and not just CGI. Director Colin Trevorrow shared the following video on Twitter, showing off a Triceratops puppet in action…
And here’s the incredibly cute, completed version…
Combining cutting edge computer generated animation with incredible, practical effects and actual built sets is what made the original Jurassic Park so special. It’s nice to see that tradition is being continued in Jurassic World 3.
WHAT IT’S ABOUT
Good luck with this one. The lid is on when it comes to getting details for the plot of Jurassic World 3. We know Fallen ended with Grady and Dearing making a little family of sorts with Maisie and we also know that Maisie has set the dinosaurs free. So now that they are on U.S. soil, where do we go from here and how do the original three play into the story?
One thing they might be doing is exploring putting dinosaurs in unfamiliar environments. Through five total Jurassic Park/Jurassic World movies we’ve only ever really seen dinosaurs in a tropical environment. But Jurassic World: Dominion director Colin Trevorrow just posted this photo of the shooting the movie up in the cold near a snowy mountain range…
Could we be getting dinosaurs in the snow? Because I really need to see dinosaurs in the snow. Adding more fuel to the idea that we’re going to get dinosaurs battling in winter, Colin Trevorrow also posted this photo…
Real dinosaurs, like the ones that actually existed in the past, would not be able to survive in cold temperatures. But remember, even though the dinos of Jurassic World look real, they’re actually genetically engineered creatures. Who knows what kind of tinkering they did, maybe they tweaked their DNA so they don’t need to wear sweaters.
Trevorrow did tell Entertainment Weekly that “Jurassic World 3 will be a science thriller in the same way that Jurassic Park was.” Trevorrow and Carmichael also released a short video that starred Andre Holland (Castle Rock) called Battle at Big Rock, showing just what happens when dinosaurs roam freely across the country. Check it out below!
JURASSIC WORLD 3’S REAL TITLE
As of today, it is known as Jurassic World 3, though it is also operating under the working title Arcadia.
THE FUTURE OF JURASSIC WORLD
While this is said to be the last of the Jurassic movies, it’s worth asking: What if the box office numbers for Jurassic World 3 are huge? So huge that a third trilogy begins? Fans of the Jurassic movies can keep their fingers crossed.
RIP IRRFAN KHAN
Actor Irrfan Khan died on April 29, 2020 at the age of 53, after a long battle with cancer. He was rushed to a Mumbai hospital on the previous day with a severe colon infection. The actor was soon put in intensive care where he died “surrounded by the people he loved most.”
Irrfan Khan has been battling cancer since 2018 when he learned he had a rare form of the affliction. He continued working during that time.
Khan was a prolific Bollywood star and became a well loved character actor in Hollywood. He appeared in such movies as Life of Pi, Slumdog Millionaire, The Amazing Spider-Man, and of course most notably Jurassic World.
In the new Jurassic World he was tasked with playing the park’s owner. He had big shoes to fill, serving the place once carried by the great Richard Attenborough. Khan pulled it off brilliantly.
In all Irrfan Khan appeared in more than 97 films and 43 episodes in a career spanning four decades.
Jurassic Destiny
Chris Pratt didn’t know it at the time, but being part of the Jurassic Park franchise was his destiny, even way back when he was first starting out as an actor on the TV series Parks & Recreation. It was in a fictional Jurassic Park theme restaurant on the show, where he made one of his first plays to get big screen time.
Chris Pratt reveals to Jimmy Kimmel…”There was a restaurant in Parks and Rec called the Jurassic Fork, and that was where we would go to eat. They gave us dinosaur-sized portions. And so I didn’t have anything to say in the scene. So, inevitably, I wanted to try to get some screen time and I decided I would eat one rack of ribs per take. If the camera happened to catch me, I would absolutely be inhaling ribs.”
So just how much did he eat? He’s got the numbers…
“I went through 12 takes; I went through 12 racks of ribs, which is the equivalent of six pigs. And then at lunch, because our catering company was creating the ribs, they cooked ribs. I sat down with another four racks of ribs, right next to Nick. And ate the ribs, and I got a big laugh. I gave myself a food coma.“
He’ll have to stay far away from Jurassic Fork, if he wants to fit into his tight pants for Jurassic World 3.
