Lost In Space Season 3: This Will Be The Robinson’s Finale
With season two in the rearview, it feels like a natural time to look toward the future and talk about what’s in store for Lost in Space season 3.

Fans are looking forward to Lost in Space season 3. At the tail end of 2020, Netflix dropped season two of their slick, epic-scale revamp of the campy sci-fi classic Lost in Space. Full of robots, sweeping space action, and fantastic special effects; it may not be the deepest or most complex series, but it is a pretty good time.
With season two in the rearview, it feels like a natural time to look toward the future and talk about what’s in store for Lost in Space season 3. What kind of shenanigans will Don get up to? What kind of trouble will Will Robinson find himself in next time? How much longer can Doctor Smith keep up this charade? Will there even be a season 3? Come along as we try to answer these and more questions.
Just a heads up, we will wander into spoiler country for season two of Lost in Space. If you haven’t checked it out the previous seasons yet, tread carefully.
Lost in Space Is Done After 3
Netflix has officially greenlight Lost in Space season 3. That’s the good news. The bad news is that it won’t get a season 4. We got official confirmation that Lost in Space season 3 will be the show’s last, via this tweet…
The next big question is: when will Netflix release Lost in Space season 3?
With only two seasons in the bag, there’s not much of a pattern to look at. Still, it never hurts to examine history and precedent. Netflix approved season two of Lost in Space two months after season one debuted. If they follow suit this time, we might hear something by February. Then again, it’s Netflix, so who knows? They operate on their own timeline.
So it might be a while before we Lost in Space season 3. Production on season one wrapped up in July 2017 and the series didn’t see the light of day until April 2018. Season two finished principal photography in January 2019, with a premiere date of December 24, 2019.
Even once cameras roll, we will likely have a similar wait time. Which makes sense. This is a big production, one with elaborate sets and locations, and a ton of special effects to perfect in post-production. Basically, don’t exect Lost in Space season 3 in 2020. At this point, 2021 seems like the best bet.
Who Will Return for The Next Chapter?
Who should we expect to return for Lost in Space season 3? The short answers is pretty much everyone, or at least most of the major players.
Season two ends with events that are sure to alter the landscape of the series. Things may be dramatically different for everyone moving forward, and they likely won’t ever get back to normal, at least not for a very long time. Still, almost everyone is alive. At least the characters whose names you know.
Because of that, we should expect to see the bulk of the core cast back for Lost in Space season 3. The Robinsons and friends might be split up and having their own adventures, and in dire straits, but they’re still very much breathing. So we’ll see Maureen (Molly Parker), John (Toby Stephens), Will (Maxwell Jenkins), Judy (Taylor Russell), and Penny Robinson (Mina Sundwall). Outside of the family, Don West (Ignacio Serricchio) is very much in play. And Robot, it wouldn’t truly be Lost in Space without him.
The biggest question, however, involves Parker Posey’s Dr. Smith/June Harris. She appears to sacrifice herself in order to save the Resolute. That was a big, noble gesture on her part, and the culmination of her arc. But it might not be what it seems. Robot finds her rubber ball and scarf, and though we’re led to believe she’s dead, it certainly hints she might have figured out a way to save herself, too. That definitely fits with her character. It’s hard to imagine her being entirely selfless, just like you can’t imagine she didn’t have an exit strategy in mind. Still, if she’s alive, and how she survived, are big questions Lost in Space season 3 will have to answer.
The fate of other characters also remains a bit more up in the air. Like, what happened to Ben Adler (J.J. Field)? It looks like he sacrificed himself for Scarecrow, but is he dead? Alive? Something else? We’ll also have to wait to see the likes of Victor Dhar (Raza Jaffrey), Angela (Sibongile Mlambo), Hastings (Douglas Hodge), and Captain Kamal (Sakina Jaffrey), among various other series regulars. Most of them are alive, but what if any role they play in Lost in Space season 3 remains up in the air.
What is the Plot of Lost in Space Season 3?
Now for the million-dollar question: what will Lost in Space season 3 be about?
Season two ends in a major cliffhanger. Actually, it ends with a couple of major cliffhangers. Maureen and John cause a distraction and allow the children of the Resolute to escape, but now they, along with Don, find themselves stuck where they were, unable to follow the kids.
For their part, Judy leads the children to safety, though they don’t wind up where they expected. Instead of the welcoming arms of Alpha Centauri, they wind up somewhere else. Somewhere else that just so happens to be home to the remains of the Fortuna, the long-lost ship captained by Grant Kelly, aka Judy’s biological father. Then there’s Smith. Though she appears to sacrifice herself, it’s pretty obvious she’s not dead.
Given this setup, there are a ton of directions Lost in Space season 3 can go. We mentioned earlier, that though more episodes haven’t been ordered yet, the creative team is working as if they had. They’ve also dropped a few hints of where the series might head.
There are some obvious storylines to tackle. They have to deal with Smith, the elder Robinson’s will try to get back to their kids at all costs, we’ll hopefully learn more about the Robots, and it appears Judy will learn something about the fate of her biological dad. How the specifics of these story threads play out, however, remains to be seen. And isn’t that why we watch these shows in the first place?
One big difference for Lost in Space season 3 is that when it begins, the core group of characters aren’t going to be together. From what the behind-the-scenes players say, much of the season will revolve around this split narrative.
Showrunner Zack Estrin told Den of Geek they plan to roll with this situation. According to him, the big questions of the season will be, “How do the kids and the parents find their way back together?” and “What’s it like for the kids without the guide of their parents?” Both should provide fertile ground to explore.
Lost in Space season 3 will also hearken back to the original series. According to the same article, they take inspiration from an episode called “Welcome Stranger.” In it, the Robinsons encounter a famous astronaut, one thought lost, who might be able to get the kids back home to Earth.
Though there are no further details, it’s easy to imagine a scenario like this playing out in the new series. Grant Kelly, Judy’s biological father, is a famous astronaut, one everyone assumed was lost. Could he still be alive? If so, might he be able to get the get save the kids? This seems like it could play a major part in Lost in Space season 3.
