Upcoming Horror Movies With Release Dates
The Rental | July 24, 2020
The Rental is a horror movie directed by Dave Franco, yes that Dave Franco, who has been gradually transitioning from actor to filmmaker. It stars, among others, Alison Brie and here’s the first trailer…
The Rental looks like an old fashioned slasher movie set in a creepy AirBNB. If that’s your thing, you’re probably going to love this.
A Quiet Place: Part II | September 4, 2020
A Quiet Place II was originally due to be released on March 20, 2020. Due to movie theaters being closed by the Coronavirus, that release date has now been rescheduled to September 4, 2020.
The initial news of its cancellation came from director/star John Krasinski on Twitter who had this to say…
A Quiet Place was a surprise hit in 2018, so much so that it was pretty much a given that a sequel would happen. John Krasinski (The Office, A Quiet Place) is back in the director’s chair as he is hoping to follow-up his big hit with this second one. His wife, Emily Blunt (Mary Poppins Returns, A Quiet Place) also returns as the widowed mother of two who, along with a mysterious stranger, try to survive against creatures who hunt only by sound.
In addition to directing John Krasinski is back acting in the movie too. Here’s our first look at him in the Super Bowl teaser trailer for A Quiet Place II…
Cillian Murphy (The Dark Knight, Red Eye) and Djimon Honsou (Shazam!, Aquaman) have been brought on to help fight these creatures. Here they are in the first trailer for A Quiet Place II.
The New Mutants | TBA
Is it really going to happen? Are we actually FINALLY going to see The New Mutants on the silver screen? It looks like a yes from all accounts. The on-again, off-again, on-again project looks to truly be on again and it also seems to have gone back to its original horror movie premise. Rumor has it, the great response from the 2017 trailer is what eventually took it back to its roots also causing some extensive reshoots.
The film, part of the X-Men universe, stars Anya Taylor-Joy (Split, The Witch) as sorceress Magik and Maisie Williams (Mary Shelley, Cyberbully) as shapeshifter Wolfsbane. With all the delays and reshoots, what is seen in the trailer may not be in the final product. Only time will tell.
Antlers | TBA
This original tale comes from producer Guillermo del Toro (The Shape of Water, Pan’s Labyrinth) and is directed by Scott Cooper (Black Mass, Hostiles) telling a story about a boy who is harboring a dangerous and scary secret.
From the looks of the creepy trailer for Antlers, the boy is his monster’s keeper. Keri Russell (Mission Impossible 3, August Rush) and Jesse Plemons (Game Night, The Irishman) headline this movie that begs to answer the question: What the heck is that monster?
Antebellum | TBA
A horror time travel movie? Looks like that is exactly what Antebellum is all about. Janelle Monáe (Hidden Figures, Harriet) is a present-day author who somehow finds herself moving back and forth in time, to a period of slavery and civil war. The race is on for Monáe to figure out how to stay in the present or forever be caught in the past. Jena Malone (Stepmom, The Ruins) also stars.
Saw 9 aka Spiral | TBA
When this movie was announced, its release date was in the Saw franchise’s normal October time period. Since then the new Halloween movie also tabbed an October 2020 release. So movie number nine in the Saw series moved back to its May release. They’re calling it Spiral.
The first ever trailer for Spiral recently leaked online and it features Chris Rock and Samuel L. Jackson. Watch it before it’s gone…
So far not much is known about this ninth entry in a franchise that has followed serial killer John Kramer, aka Jigsaw, as he delivered his horrific brand of justice. What we do know is that this horror film is no longer in the creative hands of series creators Leigh Whannell and James Wan but has now shifted to none other than comedian Chris Rock (Grown-Ups, Grown-Ups 2).
Not only is Rock starring in and executive producing the movie, the story idea came from Rock and he is also starring in it. In another bit of big news surrounding the movie, Samuel L. Jackson (any number of Tarantino or Marvel movies) has also been announced to star in it, possibly as Chris Rock’s father. Needless to say, interest is high for number nine.
Candyman | June 12, 2020
If Jordan Peele (Us, Get Out) has his way then the summer of 2020 is going to be the summer of Candyman. Peele is bringing his writing and producing talents to this upcoming horror movie remake.
It now stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Us, Aquaman) in the lead role, taking over for Tony Todd who starred in the original Candyman and its two sequels. The reboot is expected to return to where the film initially began; the housing projects of Chicago.
The movie has unleashed its first full trailer. They dare you to say his name. We dare you too…
Malignant | August 14, 2020
This horror movie, directed and co-written by James Wan (Aquaman, Saw) and is said to be based on his 2011 graphic novel, Malignant Man, about a man with a cancerous tumor that instead turned out to be a parasite that gave him special powers. Annabelle Wallis (Tag, The Mummy) will star in the movie along with Jake Abel (Supernatural, The Lovely Bones).
The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It | September 11, 2020
While James Wan sadly is not in the director’s chair for this third entry into the Conjuring-sphere, he does return to produce and co-develop the story.
The Conjuring 3 sees the return of Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as Ed and Lorraine Warren who become involved in one of the first cases in U.S. history where a murder suspect used demonic possession as a defense. It was said this demonic possession caused a werewolf-like transformation. Michael Chaves (The Curse of La Llorona) will direct the screenplay written by David Leslie Johnson (The Conjuring 2, Aquaman).
Last Night in Soho | September 25, 2020
Wait. Not one, but TWO upcoming horror movies about time travel? Admittedly, we are trying to figure out the horror aspect of this Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) straight horror flick.
Last Night in Soho stars Anya Taylor-Joy (Vampire Academy, Glass) as a fashion designer who somehow is able to enter the 1960’s where she has a chance meeting with her idol, a wannabe singer. But London and the 1960s isn’t what it seems to be, and things go from bad to worse in a hurry. Horrifically? We’ll see.
Halloween Kills | October 16, 2020
What started as a reboot of the popular Halloween series has now turned into a reboot trilogy. With the 2018 reboot earning over $255 million at the box-office, it was easy to see why a second would be made, but a third?
Any way you slice it, Halloween Kills will once again see Jamie Lee Curtis reprise her role as Laurie Strode as she tries to fight off the never-ending attack from Michael Myers. For those of you who are familiar with John Carpenter’s original Halloween, this sequel is also noteworthy for the return of a few original characters. Tommy Doyle, the young boy Laurie Strode was babysitting is back as is Lindsey Wallace, another young child being babysat in the original. Another character, Lonnie Elam, also returns. Lonnie was one of the bullies who picked on Tommy Doyle at school. Two more original characters are set to return, Nurse Marion Chambers and Sheriff Leigh Brackett. Judy Greer (Arrested Development, Jurassic World) and Andi Matichak (Blue Bloods, Orange is the New Black) co-star as Laurie Strode’s daughter and granddaughter. David Gordon Green is also back in the director’s chair.
Upcoming Horror Movies In Development
The Hunger Remake | Early Development
The 1983 erotic horror movie The Hunger starred Susan Sarandon, Catherine Deneuve, and David Bowie as a lusty vampire. Now David Bowie’s son may be ready to remake his father’s movie. Word is that Duncan Jones (director of Moon) is on the studio’s shortlist to both write and direct the redo. That’s right, acclaimed director Duncan Jones is the late David Bowie’s son.
Better still, Jennifer Lawrence is being eyed to play one of the movie’s two female leads. It’s worth pointing out that development is still in the early stages, so it’s not clear if she’ll sign up. The movie’s eroticism seems a little bit outside Lawrence’s wheelhouse and for his part, Jones has gone to great lengths to distance himself from his father’s fame and legacy in the past.
The original was directed by the late-great Tony Scott. Now he’s best known for movies like Top Gun, True Romance, Crimson Tide, and Enemy of the State.
Children Of The Corn Remake | In Production
The 1984 film Children of the Corn is more than just a classic horror movie, it’s become a cultural touchstone, a pop culture reference even people who’ve never seen it make whenever something is just too creepy. So it make sense that Hollywood would want to remake it.
What no one seemed to realize is that they’re remaking it right now. THR has discovered that a Children of the Corn remake is already underway and secretly shooting even in the middle of the Coronavirus pandemic. It’s being made by producer Lucas Foster (Ford v Ferrari) and director Kurt Wimmer and they’ve received special exemptions from the Australian government to continue on with production in the middle of the Coronavirus lockdowns.
Scream 5 | In Development
Scream 5 is in development under the oversight of the great horror director Wes Craven. And best of all, they’re bringing back Neve Campbell to star in it. Neve made the announcement on the ReelBlend podcast where she had this to say…
“They’ve come to me and we’re having conversations. It’s a little hard at the moment because of COVID to know when that’ll happen. Hopefully, we can see eye to eye on all of the elements that have to come into place for it to happen. I originally had been very apprehensive about doing another Scream movie without Wes because he’s such a genius and he is the reason they are what they are. But the directors who have come to me have come with such a great appreciation for Wes’ work and really want to honor it. And that meant a lot to me. Hopefully, we’ll be able to do it.”
– -Neve Campbell
Neve Campbell’s Sidney character appeared in all four previous Scream movies. The last one, Scream 4, was released in 2011.
Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde | Early Development
As part of their push to redevelop classic Monster movie titles, Universal Pictures is working on a new version of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde. What’s most interesting about the project is the person rumored to be taking on the titular dual role: Joaquin Phoenix.
Reportedly this would be a direct adaptation of the original classic book by Robert Louis Stevenson. Phoenix hasn’t been signed yet, he’s just one of the actors they’re eyeing for the part. On the heels of his Joker Oscar win, it’s a casting choice that’s almost too similar to his previous work. You’d think Phoenix would want to go in a totally different direction from Joker, but if the money’s right then maybe not.
Frankenstein – Early Development
With The Invisible Man having done well in theaters with both audiences and critics alike, Universal Pictures is eager to develop more of their classic movie monsters into modern movies. One of the next up for them is Frankenstein and word is they have the actor they want to play the Doctor’s monster.
Reportedly they want Tom Hardy to play Dr. Frankenstein’s tortured creation. The idea is for the new Frankenstein to be a faithful adaptation of the original Mary Shelley novel. If that’s what they’re going for, casting Tom Hardy makes a lot of sense. He’s a talented actor with a lot of range. Besides the Bane he played in The Dark Knight Rises is, weirdly, not all that different from the way the Monster was originally described in Shelley’s novel.
Wolfman – Early Development
Universal has been working to resurrect their stable of classic movie monsters for a new generation. One of the biggest they’ve long tried to bring back is the Wolfman. Previous efforts haven’t panned out, but they’re ready to try again.
A movie titled simply Wolfman is now moving forward at Universal Pictures through horror purveyors Blumhouse Productions. To star in the movie, they’ve officially signed Ryan Gosling. In this version Gosling will play a TV anchorman who gets infected and starts transforming. The vibe of the movie is described as being akin to the Jake Gyllenhaal movie Nightcrawler meets the media movie Network.
Lauren Schuker Blum is co-writing the script.
Wally’s Wonderland – TBA
Wally’s Wonderland stars Nic Cage as a drifter tricked into a job at an amusement park where the animatronics are possessed by demons. Yes you read that right. What the drifter thinks will be a boring job turns into a battle for survivor against the hordes of amusement park characters out to kill him.
The movie doesn’t have a release date yet, but we do have this first image from it…
The Exorcist Sequel – In Early Development
Ask the average person on the street what the scariest horror movie of all time is, and whether or not they’ve even seen it odds are they’ll answer 1973’s The Exorcist. With name recognition like that, it makes sense that Hollywood would want to bring it back. So they’re working on another The Exorcist.
Word is that this new Exorcist would be a direct sequel to the 1973 movie. It’ll follow the granddaughter of Linda Blair’s character, Regan, in the original movie. She’ll be possessed by a new demon, possibly even the same demon. It’s likely Linda Blair’s Regan will appear as well, in some capacity.
There have been other attempts to bring back The Exorcist in the past. The Exorcist II: The Heretic told the story of Regan as a teenager and there was even a TV series in which she became a mother. The last attempt to bring back The Exorcist was 2005’s Dominion, a prequel to The Exorcist.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre Reboot – In Development
Just how many reboots or reimagining does a franchise deserve? Well, for fans of Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise, four would be the number. Yes, the word is out that another reboot of the bloody series is on its way. The original movies included four films, the last one Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation, famously starred Matthew McConaughey and Renée Zellweger. Then came the remakes that made up two movies, one being a prequel. And finally, there was that “alternate” series that included a 3D version and the last movie made in the series, 2017’s Leatherface. So how and why is this happening?
Those two questions may never be answered but a new movie is happening. Legendary Pictures recently hired the brother team of Andy and Ryan Tohill (The Dig) to lend their vision on a new Leatherface. Legendary hopes they can cash in on what Blumhouse did for the Halloween franchise when they brought back Jamie Lee Curtis in a starring role. There is no word on where this new story will start, if it is an origin story or if Leatherface is an established chainsaw wielder, but it is known that Chris Tomas Devlin and Fede Alvarez (Don’t Breathe, Evil Dead remake) are writing the script and Alvarez seems thrilled with the Tohill brother’s vision. “The Tohills’ vision is exactly what the fans want. It’s violent, exciting and so depraved that it will stay with you forever,” Alvarez told Variety.
Jaws Reboot | TBA
The last Jaws movie, titled Jaws: The Revenge, was the fourth in the series and by the time it was released in 1987 the franchise had run out of steam. The original 1975 movie is iconic, though, so even though the idea is kicked around every now and then, no one has really touched the Jaws name since then. That’s about to change.
According to We Got This Covered, Universal Pictures is planning to reboot Jaws. Development is still in the very early stages, but they theorize that whatever they do it’ll end up being more a re-adaptation of the 1974 novel by Peter Benchley, rather than a remake of the 1975 Steven Spielberg movie.
Speaking of Spielberg there’s some hope that he’ll return to produce the remake of his sharktastic horror film, though it’s worth noting that in 2015 he said he’d never direct a Jaws remake. Producing it isn’t directing, so maybe that’s his loophole. Spielberg currently has a producer title on no fewer than twenty upcoming movies and television series. Add another on to his schedule and he probably wouldn’t even notice.
The Thing Reboot | TBA
Universal Pictures and Blumhouse are working on developing a new version of The Thing. The most famous version of the sci-fi horror tale was John Carpenter’s 1982 movie, but there have been other versions. All those versions were based on a John Campbell Jr. novella called “Who Goes There?” but this new version will be based on something else entirely.
Bloody-Disgusting reports the movie being developed now is based on Frozen Hell, which was a lost and recently discovered full-length novel version of the “Who Goes There?” novella.
The result should be both something familiar and yet totally new. Carpenter’s The Thing is one of the most terrifying movies ever made. This new version has a lot to live up to.
Little Shop Of Horrors | Early Development
A new version of the classic Little Shop Of Horrors is currently in early stages of development at Warner Bros. News of the project first broke back in 2016 and they’re only now getting around to beginning casting. But, they may have found the perfect leads.
First came word that Warner Bros. is in talks with Taron Egerton and Scarlett Johansson to star in the new Little Shop Of Horrors. Now we’re hearing from THR that Chris Evans is also in talks to star in the film along with them.
Evans is slated to play Orin Scrivello, The Dentist. In the most famous version of Little Shop from 1986, that part was memorably played by Steve Martin. While it may be hard to imagine Chris Evans as anything other than Captain America, he recently had a memorable turn as a heel character in Knives Out. The Dentist seems almost like a natural progression from that.
Egerton would take on the role of Seymour Krelborn. In the 1986 movie, that part was played by the great Rick Moranis. Egerton has actually played Seymour before, in a stage production of Little Shop of Horrors back in 2007. Taron was last seen on movie screens singing his way through the 2019 hit Rocketman.
Scarlett Johansson has been offered the movie’s female lead, Audrey Fulquard, the love interest of Seymour who works in the flower shop. Johansson is just coming off a lot of work playing her superhero character Black Widow, and also has gotten a lot of Oscar buzz for her work in the drama Marriage Story. It makes sense that she might be ready to settle in and try something totally different from either of those movies.
You’re probably wondering who will voice the plant at the center of Little Shop’s musically horrifying tale. Word is that WB is hiring Billy Porter, a noted Broadway performer and singer.
Little Shop of Horrors started out as a dark Roger Corman movie from the 60s. In 1982 it was adapted into a musical and the more famous 1986 movie followed that formula. Given the amount of singing talent involved in this new version, it seems safe to assume that the new Little Shop of Horrors will also be a musical in the vein of the highly successful 1986 version.
Beetlejuice 2 | Early Development
Hollywood has kicked around the idea of a sequel to Beetlejuice almost since the first movie came out in 1988, but nothing has come of it, until now.
Word is that Beetlejuice 2 is finally being actively developed by Warner Bros. If you’re worried that this is actually a soft-remake… don’t be. Not only is this a direct sequel to the 1988 classic, but they’re bringing back Tim Burton to make it and Michael Keaton to star in it.
No one seems sure whether Burton and Keaton have actually signed deals to return yet, but WB is at the least trying to get them to come back. Whether they’d still make Beetlejuice 2 if one or both of them bail, is hopefully a question we’ll never have to answer.
Misery Remake | Early Development
Stephen King adaptations have an uneven track record, but the best reviewed adaptation of all time is definitely Misery. The 1990 movie was a hit with both critics and audiences, and it instantly became iconic. So of course Hollywood plan to remake it.
Rumor has it that a remake of the classic is currently in early development. The plan is to modernize King’s best-selling novel, rather than using the 1990 movie as the source of their redo. Misery is the story of a writer who wrecks his car in a blizzard and wakes up to find himself injured and imprisoned in the home of a nurse who cares for him and torments him.
It’s hard to imagine anyone replacing Kathy Bates as Annie Wilkes or James Caan as Paul Sheldon, but given their current ages it’s a lock that they’ll have to.
