The Black Mirror Christmas Special With John Hamm Will Air On This Cable Provider

Black MirrorYou may know this already, but we’re big fans of the British anthology series Black Mirror. We think it’s one of the best shows on television that you might not be watching, but that we suspect you would be totally into. Well now, as a Christmas present for all of you, DirecTV plans to air the upcoming holiday special, Black Mirror: White Christmas for all of its subscribers to watch and enjoy.

The 90-minute special will debut on The Audience Network, which I can honestly say I’ve never heard of until now, at 9:30pm Eastern on Christmas night. So after you’ve opened your presents, stuffed yourself with food, and engaged in intense political and philosophical arguments with your distant relatives that may or may not result in physical violence, you can sit down and wrap up your holiday evening with a few harrowing visions of technology gone wrong.

John HammWhite Christmas boasts one hell of a cast. Headlined by Mad Men’s John Hamm, it also features Rafe Spall (Prometheus, Earthbound) and Oona Chaplin (Game of Thrones), who also happens to be Charlie Chaplin’s granddaughter. The Yule episode tells a trio of interconnected stories that focus on technological paranoia specific to Christmas time. I’m not sure what that means, but you can bet this isn’t going to be your usual uplifting holiday fare.

Hamm’s character is intended as a bridge between chapters, and will appear in all three segments. The actor said, “I am beyond thrilled to be a part of the Black Mirror Christmas Special. I have been a massive fan of the show since its inception. Its dark humour and intelligent observation of our society and values hooked me deeply as a viewer and I’m honoured that Charlie and the rest of the creative team have asked me to participate in wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas.”

Black_MirrorThat sounds promising to us, though before hand we’ll have to make sure that wherever we wind up celebrating our respective Christmases does indeed have service through DirecTV. That Dish or Xfinity crap just won’t cut it on this particular holiday.

Created by Chris Brooker in 2011, Black Mirror is something of a modern day incarnation of The Twilight Zone or The Outer Limits. Each episode has a different cast, story, and setting, though they all tend to deal with the darker side of technology, whether that means inventions exceeding human control or dependence on new gadgets and gizmos, and everything in between. There have been two seasons (both of which are available to stream if you feel like tracking them down), though a third is currently in the works.
