Not only is Zack Snyder looking forward to James Gunn and Peter Safran’s reboot of the DCU, but the Man of Steel director is so supportive of the change that he texted Gunn personally to let him know.

The DC Extended Universe began in 2013 when Zack Snyder directed Man of Steel. The cinematic universe continued until 2023, when it ended after a 10-year streak with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Overall, the DCEU faced a mixed reception, with some films straight up torn apart by audiences and critics, which is why Warner Bros. Discovery looked to reboot the studio with a pair of fresh faces to lead the charge.

Snyder Is Excited For Gunn’s Superman

James Gunn and Peter Safran were chosen to be the new co-heads of DC Studios and were given a long leash of creative freedom to produce DC movies in a way they believed would connect with audiences. Many might have thought that this change would create some animosity between Zack Snyder and the new co-heads, considering that everything Snyder built was being thrown out the window. But Snyder confirms that there are no hard feelings, and he’s actually excited to see what the pair come up with.

“You know, I’m a pretty open book. I really feel like, you know, if the characters are treated with reverence, and mythologically correct, then I’m down. I’m in,” Zack Snyder said in regard to his feelings about the future of the DCU under the new studio leads. “Let’s see what happens. I’m pretty excited. I mean, we’re going to get Superman pretty soon, so we’ll see what that’s like.”

Mutual Admiration

When James Gunn was asked if he’d heard about Zack Snyder’s comment, the Guardians of the Galaxy director said he hadn’t but that he already knew how Snyder felt. “I didn’t, but I knew it already because he’s texted me,” Gunn wrote on Threads. “He’s been incredibly supportive throughout this process.”

Curious fans wanted to know how Zack Snyder felt about being replaced and the future of the DCU. “He contacted me to express his support about my choices. He’s a great guy,” Gunn replied to a fan comment on X. “Again, he seems really happy with the massive world-building he’s doing now.”

Zack Snyder Is Busy With Rebel Moon

As for the “massive world-building,” Gunn was referring to Zack Snyder’s current project, Rebel Moon. The series begins with a two-part feature film on Netflix. It’s an epic space opera co-written by Snyder, Kurt Johnstad, and Shay Hatten, with the screenplay based on Snyder’s own story.

The first two parts of Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon are already on Netflix, with the second part freshly released earlier this month. The series is set in a fictional galaxy that blends elements of the cowboy-style pre-Space colony with epic space fantasy; the narrative unfolds in a universe dominated by the imperialistic Motherworld. The third film is already in the works, and the entire series is planned to spread across three features, each split into two movies, for a total of six films.

Meanwhile, Superman is set to kick off the new DCU, post Zack Snyder’s departure. The movie will debut in theaters on July 11, 2025.
