Away – September 4, 2020

Away is a new sci-fi series coming to Netflix. It stars Hilary Swank as Emma Green, an astronaut on a year-long mission to Mars. Below is the first ever teaser trailer for Away

Along with the trailer comes our first ever images from the upcoming Netflix series. Take a look…

The above Away images show off the rest of the cast including the mission’s engineer Misha Popov (Mark Ivanir), botanist Kwesi Weisberg-Adebayo (Ato Essandoh) and chemist Lu Wang (Vivian Wu). Apparently they also have a fighter pilot on board, though I don’t know why they’d need one on a mission to Mars (aliens?). The fighter pilot is played by Ram Arya (Ray Panthaki).

Enola Holmes – September 23, 2020 on Netflix

Netflix holmes

Netflix has announced they’ve acquired the movie Enola Holmes with plans to debut it on their streaming service.

Dave Chapelle & Friends: A Talk with Punchlines – TBA

NEtflix comedy

Dave Chapelle has filmed one of the most unique and interesting comedy specials ever performed, and it’s coming to Netflix. Called Dave Chapelle & Friends: A Talk with Punchlines it was filmed in the middle of the Coronavirus pandemic and in the middle of the George Floyd protests, and it discusses them both.

You can watch the first 30 minutes of Dave Chappelle’s special in which he talks about all the things people care about most right now, but not at all in the way you might expect, bel0w…

What’s particularly unique about it is that the special was filmed outdoors on a farm in Ohio where Dave Chappelle lives. The tone is that of a bunch of country living friends getting together to listen to their friend Dave talk. No word yet on when the full special is released on Netflix, but you’ll want to be there when it is.

Glow Season 4 – 2020

GLOW returns to Netflix

This is the final season for the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling. The 1980s wrestling series starring Alison Brie has been a fan favorite as it fictionalized the real lives of professional women wrestlers from the past. Season three left off in a big way, and fans are excited to see how it will all wrap up.

While Netflix has yet to give us a release date for the finale season, if we judge by past years, it will likely release in the summer of 2020.

Ratched – September 2020

Ratched

Another big series from Ryan Murphy. You’ve likely heard of the novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey, which was made into a film in 1975. Ryan Murphy is coming at that story with a fresh angle, telling the origin story of Nurse Mildred Ratched. Nurse Ratched will be played by Sarah Paulson, famous for her roles on American Horror Story

In Ratched, we’ll see this character go from a perfectly ordinary nurse to a woman capable of creating nightmares for her patients. This series has already been renewed for a second season, so we’re expecting big things.

Stranger Things Season 4 – December 2020

Stranger Things 4 coming

If you search anything about the upcoming fourth season of Stranger Things, you’ll find two things.

First, you’ll find people hoping it will be released in 2020. While nothing has been officially announced, the Stranger Writers official Twitter account has said they believe the fourth season will be released in 2020. A December release would put a year and a half between seasons three and four, which is consistent with past releases for the series.

Second, fan theories about what is going to happen. Where will the series take place? Will there be a time jump? Is a certain fan favorite character coming back? What is happening? Season four will likely answer these questions, and then supply even more.

The Haunting Of Bly Manor (The Haunting Of Hill House Season 2) – 2020

Haunting on Netflix

While this second season has a brand new name and will be following the adventures of new characters, you can expect the same tone from the show that you saw in The Haunting of Hill House. The Haunting of Bly Manor was inspired by a horror novella from 1898 called The Turn of the Screw, a story of two orphaned children and their governess. The governess soon senses evil in Bly Manor and is tasked with protecting her charges.

While this new season has a new title and new characters, some of the cast from the original season are returning. Those returnees include Kate Siegel, Henry Thomas, and Victoria Pedretti.

I’m Thinking of Ending Things – 2020

Coming soon to Netflix

If you love a road trip movie, I’m Thinking of Ending Things promises to be a unique one. This Netflix original thriller movie follows a woman road tripping with her boyfriend to his parents’ farm house. They take a detour that goes from strange to terrifying.

The movie is based on the novel by Iain Reid and is being brought to the screen by Charlie Kaufman (the mind behind Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Being John Malkovich). The film will star Toni Collette, Jessie Plemons, and Jessie Buckley.

Warrior Nun Season 2 – Coming Soon

Netflix original series

Netflix has officially renewed the original series Warrior Nun for another season. Here’s their official announcement…

Despite lackluster reviews like this one, Warrior Nun was one of the hottest shows of the summer for Netflix. We’ll have more on where they plan to take the show next, soon.

Bird Box 2 – Coming Soon

The Sandra Bullock led movie Bird Box was one of the first Netflix produced movies to become a really big, significant hit back in 2018. So it makes sense that Netflix would want more. The author of the book on which Bird Box was based, Josh Malerman, says the streaming giant is already working on Bird Box 2.

Details on the nature of the sequel are currently sparse but Malerman explains, “I can’t say much… but I can say that it is in development. Sometimes it’s weird, all this secrecy, but I’m game.”

A sequel to Malerman’s novel has already been written and is set to hit store shelves. He says his sequel novel was inspired in part by watching the movie adaptation of the first book. So it seems likely that Bird Box 2 will be based on the sequel novel.

Kick-Ass Reboot – Rumored Development

Netflix reboot

A reboot of the popular Kick-Ass movie superhero franchise is rumored to be in development at Netflix. The original movie series was made up of two movies, the first of which became a huge cult hit and the second one being less well received.

The movies were based on a series of comics by Mark Millar. In 2018 Millar rebooted the comic in print, with an African-American mom and an Afghanistan war vet taking over as the new main characters in Kick-Ass. It’s thought this version may be what Netflix is adapting, given their current hunger for increased diversity.

Beverly Hills Cop 4 – In Development

Action movie franchise

Beverly Hills Cop 4 is happening and like so many movies it’s skipping theaters and going straight to Netflix. The other Eddie Murphy franchise being resurrected, Coming To America, is actually getting a theatrical release.

Axel Foley remains Eddie Murphy’s most well-known and popular character to date, so the acquisition of the fourth entry in the franchise is a huge deal for Netflix. Jerry Bruckheimer is producing the movie with Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah directing. The most recently directed the action movie hit Bad Boys For Life.

Beverly Hills Cop III was released way back in 1994. 26 years is a pretty long gap between sequels. Making this work won’t be easy.

Talking about their plans for Beverly Hills Cop 4, the movie’s directors had this to say to Digital Spy: “We’re still involved in that project, and there’s a screenwriter now on it that’s going to try to write a first draft, or a first treatment at least with the story. So we’re going to see what the first version will be, but we’re very excited and hope that we can work with another icon like Eddie Murphy. That’d be great. It was the quintessential Jerry Bruckheimer movie, a buddy cop, humorous action movie. Bad Boys is a Beverly Hills Cop kind of movie. And of course, Eddie Murphy is an idol.”

Ball And Chain – In Development

Netflix superhero movie

Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt are set to star in the upcoming movie Jungle Cruise, and apparently they liked working together so well they’re planning another project together. They’ll next team up in a superhero movie called Ball and Chain. Better still, the project has decided to skip theaters and go straight to Netflix.

Ball and Chain is based on a comic book about a couple on the verge of divorce who discover a meteor that gives them superpowers. I’m imagining something like the married version of My Super Ex-Girlfriend, though hopefully better.

There was something of a bidding war among the major Hollywood studios to get the project, so it’s a pretty big coup that they’ve decided they’d rather be on Netflix than go with one of those big studios in the hopes that the movie could end up in movie theaters (should they survive the pandemic). Accelerated by the Coronavirus pandemic, the #JustStreamIt movement is growing rapidly, and this is another signal that the times are changing.

Sweet Tooth – Coming Soon

Netflix furry

Robert Downey Jr. is producing a TV series for Netflix which he probably intends as innocent kids programming. However, it will in actuality almost certainly end up being co-opted and fetishized by that offbeat group of adult weirdos called Furries, AKA people who like dressing up as animals and pretending to be half-animal/human hybrids. It’s the same thing that has happened to modern day My Little Pony.

The show is called Sweet Tooth and it’s an adaption of an oddball DC Comic series about a character who is half boy and half deer. When a cataclysm ravages the world the deerboy must leave the forest and venture into the outside world. The comic itself is already hugely popular with the furry world, according to the WikFur database (this is not a link I recommend).

The Sweet Tooth cast includes Christian Convery, Nonso Anozie, Adeel Akhtar and Will Forte with James Brolin as the narrator. Robert Downey Jr. is producing Sweet Tooth for Netflix with his wife Susan Downey and Arrow producer Beth Schwartz.

I look forward to the day when Robert Downey Jr. shows up at a Sweet Tooth fan event and suddenly discovers that, in fact, he hasn’t made a show for kids but has actually made one for adults who like to use the bathroom in litter boxes. The look on his face will, almost certainly, be priceless.

Sandman – Coming Soon

Sandman netflix

Author Neil Gaiman is working on a new adaptation of his popular series of Sandman comics for Netflix. The show has been greenlit and is now in full production at the streaming service.

Word is that unlike some past efforts at adapting his work, Gaiman has a lot of control on this project. He serves as an exec producer on the upcoming Netflix Sandman series. And he’s using that control in a very specific way. Speaking about what he wants done with Netflix’s Sandman he says, “My biggest request to the Sandman showrunner for when we get to the season with ‘Game of You’ in it is that we have trans men and trans women in the writers’ room. Not as consultants, but as writers.”

In the Sandman comics, “Game of You” is a storyline involving a trans character named Wanda. Though that comic arc was released way back in 1993, it has long been thought of as one of the earliest works to get a trans character right. So it makes sense that Gaiman want to have the experiences of real trans people at work in the show’s writers room.

Atomic Blonde 2 – Arriving On Netflix Soon

Netflix's atomic blonde

Based on a comic book, the original Atomic Blonde starred Charlize Theron as an MI6 agent sent to Berlin during the Cold War. There, she, well, basically just kicked a lot of ass. The movie was well received but it only made $100 million on a $30 million budget. That’s nice but no one expected a sequel. Except now it’s getting one, and it’ll be a Netflix exclusive.

Atomic Blonde 2 is currently in the works according to Discussing Film. Charlize Theron will be one of the sequel’s producers and as a result is expected to return to star.

Guillermo del Toro Presents 10 After Midnight – Coming Soon To Netflix

Coming soon to Netflix

Are you ready for a horror anthology series, Guillermo del Toro style?

What we know about this series so far is that Guillermo del Toro (the mind behind films like Pan’s Labyrinth, The Shape of Water, and Pacific Rim) will write and directing some of the 10 episode series himself and then select other top horror creators for the others. We can be sure whatever this turns out to be, it will be uniquely his style.

Guillermo del Toro has a few interesting projects being quietly worked on over at Netflix. 10 After Midnight was announced back in 2018. While we haven’t received many updates about the series, there were reports of production beginning in Toronto in the summer of 2019.

While we can’t be sure when this will be released, late in 2020 seems a fair bet.

Resident Evil – Coming Soon To Netflix

Resident Evil Netflix

It was nearly a year ago that news first broke revealing Netflix is working on a television version of the popular Resident Evil franchise. So far the Resident Evil series has stretched across multiple movies and video games, but it’s never been a series.

The Resident Evil series focuses on a future where an evil company called the Umbrella Corporation causes a viral outbreak which turns people into zombies. The movies have focused primarily on a character named Alice (played by Milla Jovovich) but word now is that the the Netflix series will go in a different direction.

According to Splash Report Netflix’s Resident Evil series will focus on the daughters of Albert Wesker. Wesker has long been one of the central recurring antagonists throughout the series. Their report says the show, set in 2022, follows half-sisters Jade and Billie Wesker. Their family relocates to a town called “Raccoon 2” which is home to the headquarters of the Umbrella Corporation. There in the suspiciously too-perfect town, the sisters start to uncover a conspiracy involving their father’s work.

The rumor’s claim is that the Resident Evil show will also feature flash-forwards to the year 2036 when the world has gone post-apocalyptic and zombies reign supreme. There we’ll follow an older version of Jade as she tries to fight off zombies and save the three-million humans still left alive.

6 Underground Trilogy – Coming Soon

The Ryan Reynolds/Michael Bay action movie collaboration 6 Underground was critically panned but a lot of people definitely watched it on Netflix. Over 80 million, according to the odd way Netflix measures viewership. Apparently it was enough people that they want to make more of them.

So word is that Netflix is planning to turn 6 Underground into a movie trilogy. That’s right, we’re getting not one but two sequels. In addition they’re also considering giving Dave Franco’s character from the film his own spinoff movie.

Other details are pretty sparse at this point, but it’s safe to assume they’ll do everything they can to keep the in demand Ryan Reynolds involved.

Adam Sandler Movies

Back in December of 2019 Adam Sandler issued the following threat to the Academy Awards, regarding his potential nomination for his work in the movie Uncut Gems

Adam Sandler is threatening to make more terrible Adam Sandler movies if Hollywood doesn't give him an Oscar for Uncut Gems. Note to the Academy: Save us!

Posted by Giant Freakin Robot on Wednesday, December 4, 2019

The Academy responded by snubbing Sandler for an Oscar nomination.

Best Actor Sandler?

He followed that Oscar snub with this hilarious, vulgar speech after winning Best Actor at the Independent Spirit Awards…

But that award wasn’t enough to stave off Sandler’s promised revenge. Now Sandler is following through on his threat.. and then some. He’s planning to make not one, but four really terrible movies. Or at least we assume they’ll be terrible because he’s signed a new deal with Netflix to make four more movies for them. All the previously released movies which Sandler created for the streaming service were savaged by critics, but were apparently heavily watched by audiences (who also gave them really low scores) since Netflix is paying him a boatload of cash to make four more.

Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos had this to say about their new deal with Sandler, “Whether you know him as Sandman, the Water Boy, Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore, Nick Spitz or simply Adam, one thing is clear: our members can’t get enough of him. They love his stories and his humor, as we saw with Murder Mystery. So I could not be more excited to extend our partnership with Adam and the Happy Madison team and deliver more laughs around the world.

Sandler’s last Netflix movie was called Murder Mystery and it co-starred Jennifer Aniston. The Netflix exclusive movie currently has a 44% score with critics and a 41% score with audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.

Netflix Asked To Slow Down Your Streaming

As people are being locked in their homes by the Coronavirus, they’re watching more and more Netflix. And that extra streaming is causing a huge problem for internet service providers. It’s become such a big problem for Europe, they’re asking Netflix to stop letting people watch their shows in HD.

Thierry Breton, the European Commissioner for Internal Market and Services announced it on Twitter…

No HD on Netflix? This is going to be great for Euro-Disney+.

Content Censored By Netflix

Netflix has revealed they’ve been forced to remove some content at the request of various governments. They even provided a list of nine movies they’ve removed and which governments requested the removal.

“We offer creators the ability to reach audiences all around the world. However, our catalog varies from country to country, including for rights reasons (i.e., we don’t have the rights to show everything in every country where we operate). In some cases we’ve also been forced to remove specific titles or episodes of titles in specific countries due to government takedown demands. Below are the titles we’ve removed to date, as of February 2020 — just nine in total since we launched. Beginning next year, we will report these takedowns annually.
