The Most Popular Police Procedural In History Is On Netflix

By Douglas Helm | Published

Sometimes, you just need a binge-able procedural series that is consistent, entertaining to watch, and that doesn’t necessarily require your undivided attention like some prestige dramas. If that’s something you’re in the mood for, then why not choose one of the OG bingeable shows with NCIS, which now has Seasons 12 through 17 streaming on Netflix? Each season on Netflix has at least 20 episodes, so you have over 100 episodes to take down if you want to see some crimes busted.

One Of The Longest-Running Shows In History

NCIS boasts the unique distinction of being the third-longest-running scripted, live-action US primetime TV series currently on the air, with the other binge-able shows Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and Law & Order claiming the other two spots. The series follows a team of special agents who work for the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, aka NCIS. Dubbed the Major Case Response Team, these agents take on crimes related to the Navy and the Marine Corps, like treason, deaths, etc.

NCIS is led by Mark Harmon as Supervisory Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs, who stayed in the lead role for a whopping 19 seasons.

Netflix Still Features The Gibb Years

While Season 20 sees Mark Harmon step down from the lead role, tuning in for the twelfth through the seventeenth seasons available on Netflix lets you see Harmon do his thing as Gibbs. NCIS, as with most procedurals that seem to go on forever, isn’t going to blow your mind with its story by any means, but it’s a solid show with a solid cast.

Along with Harmon, the twelfth season will kick off your binge with a likable lead cast that also includes Michael Weatherly, Pauley Perrette, Sean Murray, Brian Dietzen, Emily Wickersham, Rocky Carroll, and David McCallum.

An Absurd Number Of People Watched This Season

Season 12 of NCIS also features Alex Veadov as the season’s antagonist, Sergei Mishnev. Sergei ends up being an engaging antagonist for the season with major personal stakes for Gibbs, giving the season some serialization along with the procedural elements. The season was one of the most-watched in the show’s history, with an average of 18.25 million viewers.

Even More NCIS To Binge

The seasons of NCIS have gradually taken a dip in the ratings since Harmon’s absence as the lead, but it remains fairly popular and was renewed for a 22nd season in April. There’s also a myriad of spin-offs that have branched off of the flagship series, including NCIS: Los Angeles, NCIS: New Orleans, NCIS: Hawaiʻi, NCIS: Sydney, and the upcoming NCIS: Origins and NCIS: Tony & Ziva.

In other words, if you enjoy your binge of Season 12-17 of the flagship series, then there’s plenty more of the NCIS world to seek out.

Get Caught Up On Netflix

Procedurals aren’t everyone’s thing, which is understandable, but if you like them and you’re in the mood for one it might as well be one that’s been decent throughout its entire run. You might not even be able to get through a full binge of NCIS Season 12-17, but the popular, long-loved show is at least there for you to try. You can head over to Netflix now to check it out.
