Lost Star Calls Character Death Worst Heartbreak Of Career

By Jason Collins | Updated

Lost star Maggie Grace—also known for her portrayals in the Taken and Twilight franchises—recently opened up regarding her relatively short time spent on Lost, calling the death of her character the worst heartbreak of her career. Those who fondly remember Lost may also remember that Maggie Grace’s Lost character, Shannon, was killed off in episode six of Season 2.

Maggie Grace Wasn’t Expecting Shannon’s Quick Death

Maggie Grace entered Lost, portraying a spoiled and compassionless Shannon, who ultimately softened up as her relationship with another character, Sayid (portrayed by Naveen Andrews), developed. However, Grace was under the impression that the showrunner would take Shannon a little further through the series instead of killing her in the second season. With that said, however, the actress also stated that she understood the reason behind her character’s death, as well as the point the showrunners were trying to communicate to the audience.

Wanted More Of A Redemption Arc

According to Maggie Grace herself, her Lost character was a caricature of white privilege, so killing the character off to prove a point wasn’t so surprising. Still, the actress had hoped that Shannon would be given a chance to redeem herself and be incredibly self-sacrificial in some ways. Shannon’s death wasn’t actually pointless either; the character dies in her lover’s arms, which provides a very emotional moment in the series, with her death having a lasting effect on the dynamics among the survivors.

The Annoying Character?

So, the killing of Shannon in the series was the narrative’s natural progression, in which the plotline didn’t require a “caricature of white privilege” anymore, and Maggie Grace joked that the death of her Lost character came about because she was so good at being incredibly annoying. Starring Maggie Grace, Lost was a popular TV series that originally aired from 2004 to 2010, focusing on the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815, which crashed on a seemingly deserted tropical island in the South Pacific.

Lost Changed Television Forever

Lost is known for its complex narrative, which is a mixture of mysterious phenomena, supernatural elements, and intense character development. Its episodes typically feature a primary storyline set on the island, which is augmented by flashback and flashforward sequences that provide additional insight into the series’ characters and explain or even justify their current behavior in the series.

The great cast, including Maggie Grace, made Lost one of the greatest TV shows of all time. It had pretty consistent ratings and some minor variance in critical reception.

Maggie Grace After Lost

Following the death of Maggie Grace’s Lost character, the actress went on to work on other projects, becoming the perpetually kidnapped daughter of Liam Neeson in the Taken trilogy and taking on the part of Irina in the Twilight Saga, as well as being a complete zombie meat mincing machine in Fear the Walking Dead series. It’s worth noting that she also appeared in Lost toward the series ending in 2010, though not as a survivor, but through a flash-sideways storyline that runs alongside the main narrative.

Those interested in revisiting Maggie’s Grace Lost performance can still watch all six seasons of the series on Hulu or through a Disney+ × Hulu subscription bundle.
