DC Green Lantern Series On HBO Is Superhero True Detective?

James Gunn’s DCU has quite a few upcoming TV shows on the slate, but perhaps one of the most intriguing is the Lanterns series, which, based on the description, kind of seems like True Detective with John Stewart and Hal Jordan. According to the official logline for the series, John Stewart is a new recruit and he’s paired with legendary Lantern Hal Jordan to investigate a murder in America’s heartland. If that wasn’t enough Chris Mundy, a writer and producer for True Detective: Night Country, is on board to co-write the project and serve as showrunner.

The Green Lantern Corps

The Green Lantern Corps are basically space cops, but Lanterns definitely seem to be leaning into the detective angle more than expected. Also on board for the project are Damon Lindelof, who knows a thing or two about superhero shows after writing HBO’s Watchmen, and Tom King, who has a prolific career in DC Comics. Lindelof and King are both serving as co-writers and executive producers on the project.

Green Lantern Needs A Good Live-Action Project

Green Lantern has yet to get a good live-action adaptation, with Ryan Reynolds’ infamous 2011 film being his most recent appearance. Now it seems that the character is getting his long-awaited redemption, and Lanterns is making the wise decision to have two of the most beloved Lanterns, John Stewart and Hal Jordan, leading the project.

Additionally, we’ll get to see Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner in James Gunn’s upcoming Superman.

Important For The DCU

James Gunn and Peter Safran, who act as co-chairmen and co-CEO of DC Studios, also gave some encouraging words about Lanterns, saying that it’s “foundational” to the DCU.

So, not only will this upcoming show (hopefully) give the Green Lanterns a chance to shine, but it’ll also be a hugely important series for the new cinematic universe Gunn and Safran are building. It remains to be seen exactly how important the events of the show are, but it’s intriguing nonetheless.

True Detective

Lanterns is set to have eight episodes, which seems like the perfect length to set up and solve an engrossing mystery. Like True Detective’s best seasons, it also seems like the show is going with a distinct setting to give more character to the world.

True Detective Season 1 had the humid and sweltering Louisiana bayous, while Night Country was set in the perpetual darkness of Alaskan winter. Investigating a murder in “America’s Heartland” will definitely give the show a distinct vibe from other superhero shows and movies.

More From The DCU

For now, we don’t have an official release date for Lanterns, but there are plenty of DCU projects on the way to keep us busy in the meantime.

The animated series Creature Commandos is set to come out sometime this year and Peacemaker Season 2 is also on the way. While not part of the DCU, we’ll also get to see HBO’s The Penguin this September, which sees Colin Farell reprise his role from The Batman as the villainous Gotham crime lord.

Meanwhile, Superman is set to release on July 11, 2025, and should set the tone for the rest of the DCU to come. It seems unlikely that we’ll get Lanterns before then, but we’ll just have to wait and see. Stay tuned and we’ll keep you updated on all things DCU.
