Dexter Resurrection Brings Michael C. Hall Back Again With New Series

Here’s some news that not only did no one ask for but is definitely going to tick off a good percentage of a fandom. Michael C. Hall is returning to the screen to reprise his role as Showtime’s serial killer with a conscience, Dexter Morgan. The new series, titled Dexter: Resurrection, was announced over the weekend at the San Diego Comic-Con panel for the other Dexter universe series about to start production, Dexter: Original Sin.

Original Sin And Resurrection

The shock factor must have been at a fever pitch for those attending the Original Sin panel at SDCC when Michael C. Hall took to the stage. Not only will he appear in the flesh in Dexter: Resurrection, but the Emmy Award-winning actor also announced that he would be voicing the inner thoughts of his younger self, played by Patrick Gibson, in Original Sin.

Right now, no super specific details have been released surrounding where the plot of Resurrection will take Hall’s iconic character, but we do know that it will take place in the present day and is expected to arrive on the network next summer.

Considering The Timeline

Fans are likely wondering how Dexter: Resurrection will fit on the timeline of the growing universe and, from what we’ve gathered, it seems that the latest installment will serve as a sequel to the largely panned Dexter: New Blood. New Blood played out as a ten-years-later follow-up to Dexter, putting it right on track to flow directly into Resurrection

In Search Of A Loophole

Another question fans will undoubtedly have surrounds the fact that Dexter died at the end of New Blood, which certainly throws a wrench in the works for what will eventually become Dexter: Resurrection. The production team has a lot of explaining to do, but after Hall delivered a cagey answer to the question of how in the heck is Dexter back again, it seems like the creative team will find a loophole one way or another; anything to bring back one of the most popular (and therefore money-making) shows to ever land on Showtime.

Original Sin’s Setup

As we mentioned, along with Dexter: Resurrection, Michael C. Hall was also announced to be joining the cast of the prequel series, Dexter: Original Sin. The show has an interesting concept as it will follow the younger version of Hall’s character as he sets out on his internship with the forensics department at the Miami Metro Police Department.

The year is 1991 and Dexter’s thirst for blood is just beginning to get out of control but luckily, he has his father, Harry (Christian Slater) to teach him how to kill only those who “deserve” it with the help of the Code. The show will also see performances from Sarah Michelle Gellar and Patrick Dempsey, making it – at the very least – filled with A-list names.

The Netflix Effect On Dexter

Part of the decision to bring Dexter back in Resurrection is thanks to the bump in viewership that it’s seen since it landed on Netflix earlier this summer. Just like Suits saw last year, an entirely new generation is checking out the celebrated drama for the first time sending its numbers through the roof. You can stream the original series now on both Netflix and Paramount+ and keep an eye out for updates surrounding both Resurrection and Original Sin.
