Check out the first look at Dark Matter for yourself:

The almost three-minute Dark Matter clip introduces viewers to physicist, professor, and family man Jason Dessen, who lives an idyllic life with his wife, Daniela (Jennifer Connelly), and son Charlie (Oakes Fegley).

In Dark Matter, Joel Edgerton’s character is kidnapped and placed in an alternate version of his life.

One night, he is kidnapped and placed in an alternate version of his life. “A different Jason stole me from my world… and he brought me to his world,” Jason says upon realizing his predicament.

Janso’s amazement swiftly turns into horror as he tries to return to his own reality amid a bewildering array of alternate lives he might have led. Within this maze of different realities contained in a “box,” Jason sets off on his quest to reunite with his real family and rescue them from the most fearsome, dangerous adversary imaginable – himself.

Crouch takes on multiple roles in Dark Matter, serving as creator, executive producer, showrunner, and writer. His collaborators include executive producers Matt Tolmach and David Manpearl from Matt Tolmach Productions. Edgerton also serves as an executive producer. The original series is produced by Sony Pictures Television for Apple TV+.

Dark Matter and its unique take on the multiverse will debut its first two episodes on May 8, followed by a new installment each Wednesday until June 26. The upcoming series adds to Apple TV+’s collection of sci-fi shows, with Constellation also featuring reality-altering themes.

Besides sharing a comparable premise with Dark Matter, other offerings with a similar feel include For All Mankind and Severance.

Apple TV+ announced its plans to develop Dark Matter in December 2020. The project received official approval that March, with Apple placing a nine-episode series order and casting Joel Edgerton. Louis Leterrier was tapped to direct the initial four episodes.

By September 2022, Jennifer Connelly and the rest of the ensemble joined the cast. Production began in Chicago in October and wrapped in April 2023.

Before Dark Matter, Joel Edgerton starred as Coach Al Ulbrickson Sr. in the 2023 biographical sports drama The Boys in the Boat. George Clooney directed the film from a script by Mark L. Smith. The film is an adaptation of Daniel James Brown’s 2013 book of the same name. It chronicles the journey of the University of Washington rowing team as they try to qualify for the 1936 Summer Olympics.

Jennifer Connelly, who stars as Daniela Dessen in Dark Matter, recently appeared in the 2023 film Bad Behavior. Billed as a black comedy, the movie is written and directed by Alice Englert, who also stars in the film. Additional cast members include Dasha Nekrasova, Karan Gill, Marlon Williams, and Ben Whishaw. Bad Behavior premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival before debuting in cinemas.
