The eighth addition to the Alien franchise, Alien: Romulus, will hit theaters on August 16. With the recent drop of the new film’s trailer, keen-eyed fans might think something feels a little familiar. According to director Fede Alvarez, that’s because the new movie is based on a deleted scene from the second Alien movie, Aliens.

The Aliens Deleted Scene

In the 1986 franchise sequel, Aliens, directed by James Cameron, there’s a deleted scene from the colony’s corridors where the audience observes children playing and exploring.

This seemingly trivial occurrence ignited Alvarez’s imagination, leading him to contemplate the fate of these youngsters as they matured in a colony requiring another 50 years for terraforming.

The Alien: Romulus director recalled saying to himself, “If I ever tell a story in that world, I would definitely be interested in those kids when they reach their early twenties.

40 Years Later, Telling The Story

Nearly 40 years later, Alvarez got his chance to tell that story, and, if the praise the director received from original directors James Cameron and Ridley Scott says anything, it’s that Alvarez’s vision was worth the wait. Alien: Romulus promises to reignite the spine-chilling saga that has captivated audiences since its inception

Clocking in at 1 minute and 2 seconds, the Alien: Romulus teaser introduces viewers to a group of youthful crew members navigating the perilous corridors of a decrepit spacecraft, encountering the terrifying Xenomorph creatures that have become synonymous with the franchise.

Among the ensemble cast is Cailee Spaeny, best known for her role in Priscilla.

While we’ve still got nearly five months before we can see the new movie, Alvarez recently revealed that two of the franchise’s most important players have already seen a version of it.

According to the director, both James Cameron and Ridley Scott gave glowing praise to Alien: Romulus. Both directors reportedly loved the film and had very few notes for Alvarez.

Ridley Scott Producing

Ridley Scott is producing Alien: Romulus, so Alvarez has worked closely with the franchise creator to ensure the film honors the iconic series. Alvarez expressed gratitude for both director’s positive feedback, noting their valuable contributions during production.

Set between the original Alien and Aliens, Alien: Romulus follows a group of youthful space colonizers exploring an abandoned space station and encountering the iconic Alien menace. Led by Cailee Spaeny as Rain Carradine, the rest of the cast includes David Jonsson as Andy, alongside Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced portraying Kay, Spike Fearn, and Aileen Wu.

More Alien Films

Disney announced in 2019 that more Alien films were on the way after the company acquired 21st Century Fox into the House of Mouse. Production for Alien: Romulus began in 2022 when Alverez was hired to write and direct the film. Casting took place between 2022 and 2023 before principal photography was shot in Budapest before the summer of 2023.

Originally intended for Hulu, 20th Century decided to transition to a theatrical release after production began. With Cameron and Scott endorsing Alien: Romulus, the movie is poised to match the quality of its predecessors.
