If Pirates of the Caribbean fans needed rock-solid evidence that their beloved series is up for a reboot, they need look no further. Jerry Bruckheimer declared in an exclusive interview that a script for the project is on the way. The powerhouse producer, whose resume includes hits like Top Gun and Bad Boys, dropped that work on the screenplay should both wrap in a month and fulfill his high expectations.

After that, it’s up to Bob Iger’s Disney to give the go-ahead. Let’s hope,” Bruckheimer said, “that Disney likes it and gives us an opportunity to make it.

Deviating From The Classic Lineup

Pirates of the Caribbean

In the event that they do green-light the Pirates of the Caribbean reboot, legions of fans will retake the high seas and resume the swashbuckling saga that wowed audiences since 2003. One significant departure from previous installments is unignorable, however: the absence of Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow.

While the departure of Johnny Depp’s iconic character is notable, its part of a larger update the project is going through, casting-wise, as original characters like Keira Knightley’s Elizabeth Swann and Orlando Bloom’s Will Turner will also be absent.

A Robbie-led Reboot Also In The Works

Another sweeping change for the franchise? The second concurrent Pirates movie also development, this one helmed by Margot Robbie, fresh off making all the money producing and starring in Barbie.

Christina Hodson, known for her scripts for Birds of Prey and The Flash, pens this female-led Pirates of the Caribbean reboot/offshoot. It’s exciting to think what this blend of sensibilities will cook up. The Robbie-led reboot was briefly believed shelved, until Bruckheimer cleared the air, saying: “We hope to get ’em both made, and I think Disney agrees they really want to make the Margot one, too.”

A Fresh Take On A Legendary Franchise

Pirates of the Caribbean

It’s been about seven years since the last Pirates film, Dead Men Tell No Tales, debuted. The movie’s plot hinted at a few potential story lines, namely the revival of dastardly antagonist Davy Jones. But the Pirates of the Caribbean reboot should chart a new course—fresh narratives and characters, albeit anchored to the lore of the franchise.

For fans, it will be a question of how much the reboot departs in spirit from the first series of films; loyal devotees will doubtlessly hope for more of the same, and Disney ultimately releases content respectful of the source material.

A Cultural Phenomenon

Pirates of the Caribbean

Soon after the debut of The Curse of the Black Pearl in the early 2000s, Disney had a cultural phenomenon on its hands. Led by the eccentric, Keith Richards-inspired Captain Jack Sparrow, the series blended the swashbuckling and the supernatural to great effect, engendering four sequels and making over four and a half billion dollars.

At their best, the films delivered a novel, exciting universe that, ideally, the Pirates of the Caribbean reboot will revive. For good reason, the world of Pirates charmed and entertained a wide audience, made up of kids and adults. Johnny Depp’s portrayal of Sparrow is perhaps his career highlight, and the franchise did wonders for his co-stars, including big names like Geoffrey Rush and Rihanna.

Recent Top Gun Reboot Gives Us Hope

Fortunately, Bruckheimer’s track record of revitalizing classic franchises is stellar—just look at the success of the recent Top Gun reboot. Plus, with Disney behind the mega-producer, it’s likely that no expense will be spared.

Hopefully, both Bruckheimer and the House of Mouse can come up with something big enough to fill Jack Sparrow’s shoes and the Pirates of the Caribbean reboot will be a success.
