The next Game of Thrones spinoff is on the way as A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight has begun filming in Belfast, Ireland. With on-set photos, casting, and some directing credits known, there’s plenty of information for fans to dig into. The spin-off’s first season is adapting George R.R. Martin’s The Hedge Knight, which means it has a completed, fleshed-out story to adapt.

The Hedge Knight Started Filming

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is the second spin-off of the massively successful HBO fantasy drama Game of Thrones, which came out in 2011. The franchise is based on George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire and its numerous offshoots, including The Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas, which the new series will adapt. The first Game of Thrones spin-off, House of the Dragon, began releasing its second season.

The Main Cast

With production underway, the main cast of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is now known. Peter Claffey, known for Harry Wild and Bad Sisters, will play Ser Duncan the Tall, while 9-year-old actor Dexter Sol Ansell will play his young squire Egg. The cast also includes Finn Bennet, Tanzyn Crawford, Daniel Ings, and Sam Spruell.

In addition to this casting information, it’s also been revealed who will be directing A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight. Writer and director Sarah Adina Smith, who has worked on shows like Legion and Hanna, will direct half of the six-episode season. The other half of the season will be directed by executive producer Owen Harris, whose other directing work includes Black Mirror and Misfits.

More Royal Intrigue

The first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will be a direct adaptation of the novella The Hedge Knight, which tells the earliest story of Dunk and Egg. That story centers around the knight and squire attending a tournament, competing for fame and glory, putting them in contact with multiple important Westeros families, including the royal Targaryen family. While there are some political twists and deep fantasy history, it’s a much more straightforward story than the epic A Song of Ice and Fire.

Bridges The Gap Between House Of The Dragon And Game Of Thrones

While the plot of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight may be simpler than the overarching war story of Game of Thrones, it is still an important part of the history of Westeros. Taking place between House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones, it will flesh out the events leading to the original series and the downfall of House Targaryen. The new spin-off will depict many events and characters mentioned but never shown in the original show.

Return To Westeros Late Next Year

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms beginning production is a good sign that it is on schedule and will likely come out as planned next year. Fans of the series can look forward to the spin-off which will continue to flesh out the history of the world many fell in love with when Game of Thrones came out. It will be released on Max and is set to come out in late 2025.
