Jake Gyllenhaal is taking the torch from Harrison Ford in the latest adaptation of Presumed Innocent, based on the novel by Scott Turow. Unlike the Ford film, this will be an eight-part Apple TV miniseries. Apple just released a gripping and tense trailer for the series, which you can check out now.

Presumed Innocent follows Chief Deputy Prosecutor Rusty Sabich (Jake Gyllenhaal), who is the prime suspect in the horrific murder of his colleague and mistress.

The series will follow Rusty as he tries to keep his marriage together while proving his innocence. Along with Gyllenhaal, the series stars Ruth Negga, Bill Camp, O-T Fagbenle, Chase Infiniti, Nana Mensah, Renate Reinsve, Peter Sarsgaard, Kingston Rumi Southwick, and Elizabeth Marvel.

Presumed Innocent is created and written by David E. Kelley from Scott Turow’s novel of the same name. Kelley and Gyllenhaal, along with JJ Abrams, are also on board as executive producers on the project.

Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions produces in association with Warner Bros Television as part of their ongoing deal.

Meanwhile, Anne Sewitsky and Greg Yaitanes also executive produce and direct episodes of the series. Matthew Tinker, Dustin Tomason, Sharr White, and Rachel Rush Rich round out the executive producing team for Presumed Innocent, with Turow and Miki Johnson serving as co-executive producers.

It is the second on-screen adaptation of the novel after Harrison Ford played the role of Rusty in the 1990 film directed by Alan J. Pakula.

It seems like the eight episodes of Presumed Innocent will give the story even more room to breathe than the taut 1990 Harrison Ford thriller. With that being said, the limited series has some big shoes to fill, as the Harrison Ford film is widely praised. The film was also a big box office success, bringing in $221 million at the worldwide box office.

Of course, the success of the Presumed Innocent miniseries will be measured by the more nebulous metric of streaming viewership. Still, with the top-notch cast attached to this project, it seems like it could be another hit for Apple TV+. Despite having a bit smaller output of original shows compared to other streaming services, Apple TV+ has done a good job of prioritizing quality over quantity.

Presumed Innocent will be Jake Gyllenhaal’s second time this year remaking a project from the 1989/1990 time period. Earlier in 2024, Gyllenhaal starred in a remake of Patrick Swayze’s 1989 action film Road House. Road House was met with decidedly mixed reviews, so hopefully, this project will fare better than that one did.

While Road House gave Gyllenhaal a chance to flex his action muscles, Presumed Innocent seems to be more in line with the type of thrilling prestige projects that Gyllenhaal thrives in. We won’t have to wait too much longer to see if the miniseries can live up to Harrison Ford’s film adaptation.

The miniseries will premiere on Apple TV+ on June 12, so if you want to see it, tune in.
