Henry Cavill is hanging up the cape. With the recent announcement regarding a reboot of Superman on the big screen, we reached out to our trusted inside source – the same one that provided Giant Freakin Robot with confirmed exclusive scoops regarding Chloe Bennet returning as Quake for a new Marvel series and Don Cheadle appearing as War Machine in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier – and they confirmed that the Man of Steel and Justice League actor will no longer be playing the role of Clark Kent.

However, there is the fact that DC is planning to introduce their own multiverse in their films with The Flash, and that will leave room for Henry Cavill to possibly return for cameo appearances and possibly to fight Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam. But, depending on when some of these projects get off the ground, it is possible that we could see the new Superman make an appearance and resolidify what the “main” version of the character will be. After the multiverse events of The Flash, a lot of the established canon is likely to be thrown out the window in favor of remixed versions of established characters.

Henry Cavill certainly cut a great figure as the Last Son of Krypton, although he seemed mostly burdened with playing an aggressively dour and sullen take on the character. His appearances in Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Justice League all put forth a less chipper, sunny, and warm take on the character than what most iterations have done. There was the hope that Cavill might get a chance to flex his more charismatic aspects in another Superman-focused film, but it looks like that will never come to pass.

Still, it would be nice to see him pop up in cameo appearances. And there is always the possibility that Zack Snyder’s Justice League could have audiences and critics reevaluating Henry Cavill’s performance as Superman. If that does happen, could Warner Bros./DC change their tune and consider keeping the actor on board for certain other projects in the DC film universe? Or will Zack Snyder’s Justice League be our last real look at him as Superman?

Honestly, it sounds like Henry Cavill has moved on to bigger things. We know that he has attached himself to a Mass Effect trilogy and possibly a television series as well. That sounds like a pretty big creative commitment. The idea that Cavill could do that, another season of Netflix’s The Witcher, and be ready to go for appearances as Superman sounds like he would be stretched way too thin. Letting go of the role of Clark Kent sounds like something he has been ready to do. He had a significant run with the character and perhaps he believes that it is time to let someone else take a shot.

Thank you for your time as Superman, Henry Cavill. You weren’t in a lot of great movies, but your dedication to the role was apparent in every single project. Hopefully, we will get to see you don the cape one more time after Zack Snyder’s Justice League, but if not, we will look forward to seeing that be your swan song to the role of the Last Son of Krypton.
